BMT, IRT and IND signage was still very prominent through the late 1970's / early 80's. Although platform signs had been modernized many of the entrances still had the familiar white on blue or white on green enamel signs dating back to the 1930's or earlier. Many IRT station entrances still read: "Interborough Rapid Transit Company"

DOT tells me Jan 2011 reopening. A six-month job has taken two years.

Not really their fault for the long delay. If you've been over there for a look, they aren't working on the bridge at all. It is the west abutment getting rebuilt. The roadway sunk so low that Q67's were scraping bottom as they headed eastbound. Excavating the west foundation, they found a whole mishmash of stuff "down there" and as of last week they were still driving piles.

The signs on the side of the stairwells of the Hoyt Avenue station were even more interesting. The BMT Lines description was painted over the original IRT enamel sign. If you let the light hit the sign just right you could read the lettering underneath which included the IRT services to Times Square as well as a description of the Second Avenue El services.

If they're going to rename these iconic structures, they might as well get corporate sponsors for them and reduce the tolls. I wouldn't mind the Triboro being renamed "the Google Bridge" if it meant that Google would pay $50 million or so for the naming rights and drivers could get some relief from that $6.50 tax, er, toll.

It would not matter if they had corporate sponsors for the bridges because they would NEVER reduce the tolls. The bridge tolls have nothing to do with the amount of money needed to maintain the bridge - the excess is used to subsidize transit operations. The tolls are already 4 - 5 TIMES what they need to be if bridge maintenance was all they paid for

Uh huh. That's not a simple question.

Why make people go through all that fuss with the EZ Pass and the cash lanes and the traffic backups approaching toll booths?

What fuss with E-ZPass? And you're aware that we are moving towards open-road tolling, with traditional cash lanes and tollbooths going away, right? In the case of bridges, it is entirely possible to move the capacity constraint from the tollbooths to the bridge itself. The MTA is starting down that road with the gateless tolling experiment at the Henry Hudson Bridge (which will soon be cashless as well).
