My dad and his friends called it the 59th St Bridge and that is the term that caught on with me - I have never called it the Queensboro in conversation.For example, to this day I tell cab drivers - "take the upper level of the 59th St bridge", etc. I'm a few years older than you and I will never change :) I wonder if a poll is taken what percentage of people call it the 59th St Bridge vs what percentage calls it the Queensboro. I would assume a large percentage do use the term "59th St"... |

In my old Brooklyn neighborhood of Kensington there was a "3 Street" which ran from 18th Avenue to Foster Avenue. It dated back to the 1850s when that little part of Brooklyn was built up separate from the future street grid. There was a 1st Street which became East 8 Street, and a 2 Street which was eliminated when Ocean Parkway was built through in the 1870s.But old 3 Street remained that until about 1968 when it renamed with new street signs as "Seton Place" after the local Mother Seton Knights of Columbus council on Lawrence Avenue. The K of C is long gone from that neighborhood which went from being a Jewish - Catholic mix to a nearly all-Orthodox and Hasidic Jewish enclave. Seton Place is actually an extension of East 2 Street, so if it ever gets renamed again, that would be the logical name for it. |

Plimpton -- George A. Plimpton, publisher of educational tracts sand treasurer of Barnard College, had a small estate there.Nelson -- I. Nelson had a house and farm there in 1867. Woodycrest -- Former estate called "Woodycrest" owned by the Ketchum family The whole area was considered part of the village of Highbridgeville, built by laborers on the Croton Aqueduct, around 1851. The former estates there were part of the ancient manor lands of Fordham. All the above info from "History in Asphalt, the Origins of Bronx Street Names and Place Names," a book published by the Bronx County Historical Society (3rd ed. 1991). |
