Bellport? Bellport is hardly a "typical Long Island Blue Collar Village". First off, "Bellport Village" is an extremely affluent area, almost Hamptons like. Then you have "North Bellport" which is like Wyandanch. And there are no Hispanics for the most part in North Bellport, not on any large scale. North Bellport is mostly Black. Bellport Village (not near the train station) is affluent rich Manhattan whites. |

I like the city....but I did that for 25 years.... I no longer want to live in an urban environment...any urban environment. I like open space. I like being able to come home at any time of day or night and not worry about parking. I like having "neighbors", and can see them if I want to, but I can also have an argument without everyone knowing. I don't like living on top of people. I like grass over concrete. That said, I also couldn't live in a real "suburban" area either. I could never live in the south shore of Nassau or middle Nassau where it's like a suburban sprawl, you may as well live in the city then in my opinion. As for Long Island, most of Long Island, the bulk of it's space is still quite open. once you get past Patchogue on the South Shore, an perhaps Smithtown on the North Shore, it's quite open. East of the William Floyd corridor even more so. While there are plenty of congested, although well kept and nice areas of Nassau and western Suffolk, there are many more open and nice areas east. There are only a few pockets of "not so great" areas, mostly on the center spine. The North Shore is probably nicer than the South Shore in "scenery", but either one is fine in their own way. |

I can see that. I lived in a rural area for 2 years when I was a kid and really liked it. But there are lots of advantages to living in a city as well. Where I'm at now is suburban and it sucks. All of the negative stuff of an urban area and none of the positives. |

Well it's probably more so Patchogue, but Mastic-Shirley is the last pocket of "suburbia". It gets open after Patchogue. Brookhaven Hamlet is downright rural...then gets "suburban" again in Mastic/Shirley, and then it's back to rural as you get to Moriches and east. |

I agree. that's why I said I could never live in "suburban" Nassau. There are plenty of less suburban areas, even in Nassau, but when I think of Levittown, East Meadow, Seaford, or any of those South Shore towns, you may as well live in the city itself, for exactly the reason you said.I don't like real "rural" either....I mean I like to look at it, but I wouldn't want to live there. There's a fine line between Suburban and Rural, and I like that fine line.... |

Long Island is a nice place to visit, but I just can't live in a place where I can't walk to do most things I want to do, the transit system is crappy, and where there are raccoons (those things scare the crap out of me, especially after once seeing one being skinned alive). Very true. Bellport Village was really nice and so was North Bellport north of Montauk Highway for the most part, it was Montauk Highway and the Long Island Rail Road station that I found to be seedy. When I was waiting for the train back to Jamaica after briefly visiting there, there was a huge group of people, all black, hanging out in the station shelter drinking and being loud that seemed like they wanted to cause trouble, but they thankfully didn't mess with me, which was surprising seeing that this was at around 12AM. After leaving the station I had wonder to myself why those people were acting that way as North Bellport itself didn't look that run down at all. |

Most nights, all I hear are crickets, and occasionally an LIRR train going through the grade crossings...otherwise total silence. And it's strange, as I can walk not too far, and I am near busy streets....that's what makes LI unusual. I have everything I want within 10-15 minutes away, but I don't have to see it if I don't want to.Anyway, I used to live on a bus street, and the M train elevated was one block away....so it was always noisy. I used to have people over, and they would say "how can you sleep with all that noise" (meaning the buses, subway trains, etc....but I didn't hear it anymore when I was there. They aren't bad where I am, so long as there isn't a moon, as there is not much artificial light at night. Some streets don't even have streetlights. But yes, if you look north or west, there is a glow of light which ruins the edges. If I look east or south though, it's total darkness in the sky (east is eastern LI, and south is the ocean which of course is dark). But the best had to be when I was camping in vermont on a "new moon" night some years ago. THAT was beautiful, there was no glow in the west and north line I have at home, and the whole sky was stars. |

Hahahahaha. I know all about the helicopters LOL.... every so often they are "looking for someone" in the not so great neighborhood nearby. It's always fun when they use the spotlight over the woods too, lol..... |

Yes, that's exactly what I mean. But the west is a little different than even that. The sky really is bigger just like the slogan.Long Beach, California used to have yellow streetlights to cut down on light pollution. It made the streets feel less safe at night because it was darker and Long Beach wasn't the safest city around in the 80's and 90's. |

I have a love/hate relationship with the helicopters. I appreciate that the police are out there, but they should leave the helicopters for when they really need them. My feeling is that since they have them available they will fly them every night regardless. They end up flying around investigating relatively minor stuff half the time. |

I hate light pollution. They have gotten a little better in some of the newer commercial buildings they have been building around here, with much lower, but enough lighting. I hate those high lights that just flood everything around it with light. |

Hahaha. Yeah, LA is famous for that, lol. If I get it once a year it's a lot, but they do do it occasionally. |

And it may only be once a year, but it's so funny, all the years I lived in "the city", I never once seen that. I only lived here a few weeks and all of a sudden it was in the sky, and I didn't know what it was, it was almost like a UFO was flying above, lol! But, they used to do it a lot more when I first moved out here about 15 years ago, they always seemed to be looking for someone with one of those helicopters, and it was always at night with the spotlight along with it. Regardless of what Luch is saying, it was a lot worse some years ago IMO. |
