Still, Brentwood is always in the news for violent crimes. The fact that Brentwood is better on paper compared to the national average is meaningless to most Long Islanders, who wouldn't live there or send their kids to school there. Why did you bring up race? To draw a conclusion that Brentwood is one of LI's worst towns b/c it's mostly Hispanic? Shame on you. |

I've been to other counties in NY and they all had cities.Glen Cove and Long Beach in Nassau County are the only cities* on Long Island. Everything else is either an unincorporated area or a village. Since the founding of the city of Rye in 1942, there has not been a new city formed in New York State. *That's in a cultural sense. In a geographic sense including Kings and Queens County, then obviously one should add New York City. |

They have their own zip codes, but most don't have their own governments unless they are incoorporated villages. Villages have their own mayors, etc, and don't have to answer to the Towns. There are towns (I mentioned the Town of Islip), those do have their own supervisors and governments. Many zip codes are in Towns. |

But they can set their own zoning laws, etc. They do their own street maintenance, garbage collection, etc. The town still collects the school tax from them, but they don't pay the town maintenance of roads, garbage collection, and stuff like that (although some may have agreements with the town, but many do not). And IIRC, in the case of zoning laws, people go to the village to apply for building permits, etc. And the village laws can be MORE stringent than the town's zoning laws, but I don't believe they can be LESS stringent. |

Where is black and white? They are all "non-hispanics"?There are two charts on the linked site, one of which shows the Hispanic/Non-Hispanic percentages. Below that one there is a pie chart which shows the racial breakdown with numbers. Without the Hispanic/Non-Hispanic percentages chart it would not be possible to tell how many Hispanics live in Brentwood because the federal government does not consider Hispanics a race. It's a safe bet that almost all of the 12,925 people who chose "other" as their race on the pie chart are Hispanic,* but that wouldn't come close to accounting for all of Brentwood's Hispanics. Many of them choose white or black for their race. * = nationally, about 95% of people who chose "other" as their race are Hispanic, most of the remainder are Middle Eastern or North African My LIRR/NYCT blog |
