We’re a nation of conspiracy theorists. That said, I do still believe that voter fraud happens and on a big enough scale that it could impact close results in local elections. I believe that vote by mail has been subject to fraud in the past, though mostly by the right. Now it happens on both sides so maybe it cancels out. In person voter fraud is mostly on the left.

The biggest form of in-person voter fraud is by people who have moved out of the district where they are registered and still vote there anyway. That is not mostly on the left. All sorts of people do it.

For one thing, I don't think that the post office forwards ballots so you would have to show up in person. And if you show up in person you probably live close enough that your actual ballot would have many of the same people anyway. For another thing, it's not clearly illegal to do so in most states. Some states explicitly allow it and I think that only a few explicitly forbid it. If you're registered there and only vote once, then it may not be fraud. What I mean is that there are lots of people that fill out mail-in ballots for elderly parents. Or people that are sick. Or otherwise away. In-person there are quite a few duplicate votes in places that don't require ID. Much of that may be inadvertent because of the same name, but it happens and no one talks about it when voter fraud discussions happen. In California those votes are provisional and ultimately counted if they don't impact an election result. I don't know that they ever have impacted a result, but in that case voters would be disenfranchised.

Someone that moves and doesn't have time to register should still be allowed to vote. Or even if they forget. And it's still one person one vote. That's different than two Al M.'s being registered yet three Al M.'s voting putting all three votes in jeopardy. To me it is. I don't see voting in your old district as a crime. Certainly not an enforceable one.

And how can it be fraudulent, other than because a moron said so? The envelopes are tamper proof. The ballots are loged by computer and assigned to you. And only one vote per person is allowed by the system. They could accidentally send you donzens of copies of your ballot, but the computer is only going to use 1.

I disagree that it's even illegal even in states that have such laws. Those laws just haven't been challenged in court because unenforceable laws aren't enforced.

I actually did receive a neighbors recall ballot in the mail just a few weeks ago. Our postal workers are not the best. I easily could have mailed it in and no one would have ever known. Worst case if I do that is that my neighbor votes in person and their name has two votes which are then flagged. What happens is that both votes are counted as "provisional" and then are both counted as long as they don't impact the result of a race. Which is to say that they only count if they don't count. None of that would be considered "fraud" and I think that things like that happen more often when everyone gets a mail order ballot.

You wouldn't have had to sign your neighbor's name somewhere in the process? If not, CA has a defect in its process that other states don't have. And if you did sign his name, that would be a crime. And also, if a lot of that double voting happened, both Republican and Democratic election officials would be aware. Why aren't the Trumpists ballyhooing how many of these incidents have occurred?
