Capital University to drop ‘Crusaders’ nickname, mascot Cappy

Capital University announced Monday that it plans to drop the “Crusaders” nickname for its sports teams and in other areas of campus life.

The decision was reached after 15 months of consideration by the board of trustees, according to a letter co-signed by chairman Andre Porter and interim president Dave Kaufman.

As part of the name change, the school also will retire the mascot known as Cappy the Crusader, who depicts a warrior who fought in the Crusades, the series of religious wars between Christians and Muslims in medieval Europe.

“We believe that the University nickname and mascot should be a unifying symbol that enhances school spirit and pride for all who are affiliated with Capital,” the letter read. “In recent years, our nickname has been challenged by students and faculty for its connection to the historic Crusades. The detailed study found a significant portion of the Capital family shares this perspective.

“At the same time, we know that this will be a difficult decision for many in the Capital family who have great pride and fond memories associated with Crusaders and Cappy. These rich traditions were also captured in the detailed study. The multifaceted considerations related to university nicknames and mascots are not unique to Capital, and this was not an easy decision for the Board of Trustees.”

The name change does not take place immediately; “Crusaders” will remain in use until a replacement is picked.

Capital said an “ideation and change process” will occur over the following months among students, faculty and alumni, among other university stakeholders.

Teams from the private university in Bexley compete in the Ohio Athletic Conference, an NCAA Division III league.

The Crusaders nickname had been in use for more than a half-century, beginning in 1963 when it was adopted by the football team, sports information director Ryan Gasser wrote in an email. The mascot debuted in 2008. It was christened “Cappy” in a vote by students at the time.

This answers my question. I didn't think The Crusaders did anything to The Chosen. But this is an old isue.

That’s an extreme analogy. What I want isn’t an erasure of history, it’s an end to veneration. Confederate traitors, crusaders and other objectionable people will still be in the museums, and history books, and we can have monuments to their victims.

We don’t need statues of Nazis or communists in town squares to keep remembering who they were and what they did.

Which of course has nothing to do with current pushes toward "political correctness."

I am confident that in 20 years, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Jefferson Davis will feature prominently in all US high school history books. There may be a bit more use of the word "however" in discussions of Washington and Jefferson.

The thing about Washington and T. Jefferson is that veneration of them is for the good that they did, it doesn’t mean they’re perfect gods who did no harm, ever.

Someone wrote the Declaration of Independence and someone led American forces to victory in the Revolutionary War and served as our first president. Those things are worthy of respect. The difference between them as slave masters and Robert E. Lee as slave drivers is that we commemorate Washington and Jefferson despite the fact that they owned slaves. Lee and Davis were commemorated because they owned slaves; they did nothing else worthy of commemoration. The lost cause was not ever something to look upon with awe and regret.

“Erasing history” is a red herring.

“Erasing history” is a red herring.

But it's a very effective one. It distracts from the fact that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 did not magically provide equal opportunity to everyone in the United States.

"Erasing history" isn't such a problem because not that many really give a FFF for history in the first place.

It's rewriting history that bothers me more.

Case in point: Woodrow Wilson. He was venerated in my school learnings as an intellectual and progressive, and in Democratic politics until recently.

I could literally write a book about the flaws and dangers of the man, from his suppression of civil liberties through his naive internationalism to his bringing America into a bloody war after he won reelection for promising to keep the U.S. out.

And that's just a start.

But what will he be vilified for: Being a garden variety racism Southern Democrat, a creature of his time.

Talk about missing a teachable moment.

We weren't in that war very long. And frankly, using Mexico as a back door for invading the USA was a very real danger; the Kaiser had already said that he intended to unite Europe "against America", and Wilson's slogan to keep the US "out of war" was craven, just like his refusal to avenge the attack on the Lusitania. (TR was reported to have said in response to that slogan "He Kept Us Out Of War" and to Wilson's habit of sending the Kaiser notes begging him to not attack ships with US citizens on board: "I was president for 7½ years, and if I were president today, I would send the Kaiser just one note—and he would know that I meant it!")

??? Where do you get that number from? Nowhere near 333,333 Americans died in WWI; more like a third of that number, when all causes are accounted for. Contrast that with the Central Powers 4.3 million.

All people put in jeopardy by Wilson's dishonesty.
