The thing about Washington and T. Jefferson is that veneration of them is for the good that they did, it doesn’t mean they’re perfect gods who did no harm, ever.Someone wrote the Declaration of Independence and someone led American forces to victory in the Revolutionary War and served as our first president. Those things are worthy of respect. The difference between them as slave masters and Robert E. Lee as slave drivers is that we commemorate Washington and Jefferson despite the fact that they owned slaves. Lee and Davis were commemorated because they owned slaves; they did nothing else worthy of commemoration. The lost cause was not ever something to look upon with awe and regret. “Erasing history” is a red herring. |
