But they aren't being used for construction, they are being used to make rockets to fire at Israel.Israel faces other problems if it removes Hamas by force. |

Hamas's military infrastructure is purposely installed among schools, mosques, and other civilian infrastructure, such that it is difficult to target just the military installations without running the risk of accidentally hitting something else. What should Israel do, not attack until Hamas decides to follow the rules of war? |

"Wait, so are you trying to argue that Hamas firing rockets justifies Israeli attacks on Palestinians who have nothing whatsoever to do with Hamas?"How do you know that the attacks are not specifically targeted at Hamas outposts? Because the NY Times and CNN says that Palestinian civilians were killed? That's no proof and you know it. And about those innocent Gaza Palestinians: I'm not seeing any popular uprisings there, as we saw in Egypt and Syria. Seems to me that the Gazans are in favor of Hamas being in charge there. So much for innocence. Finally, if Hamas goons hide in mosques and churches and under women's skirts and behind children, how would you suggest Israel retaliate? |

You do single out Israel for special treatment in your posts. No, I talk about Israel because this discussion is about Israeli policy. The Syrian border with Israel has effectively never been open to anything aside from select Druze, limited apple exports, and humanitarian emergencies. I hear Damascus is really pretty, but I can't visit. Doesn't seem to perturb you at all. And that's another straw man ripped apart. :( Even after I explicitly told you that I oppose the closure of the borders, you still insist that it "doesn't seem to perturb me." By the way, I hear Damascus is a bit violent. Even if the border were open, you might want to wait until it calms down a bit. They don't allow things that might be used as weapons because Hamas has demonstrated they will use each and every one of those items for that purpose, not the item's intended purpose. Right. Not a single house constructed, nor sewer repaired. I can't imagine what it must be like living someplace where anything that "might" be used as a weapon is banned. Israel does not control Gaza's internal affairs. Neither does America re: Iraq. At least not on paper, in both cases. Exert a tremendous level of influence over a territory and you are not "disengaged" from it. Israel doesn't control Syria's internal affairs but they share a border, is Israel engaged in Syria? Is the availability of goods in Syria controlled by Israel? Your double standards aren't being missed by the rest of us. Again with the projection. |

Since you can't even identify the left, I doubt you have the slightest clue about their position re: Israel.I haven't done any surveys but I do know that the left (a) generally opposes getting involved in other people's affairs and (b) disagrees internally a lot so I'd expect a plurality of liberal Americans to think the US should keep its nose out of the Middle East entirely and a broad spectrum of other opinions ranging from "overthrow Hamas" to "try and use America's considerable weight to break up the fight" to "change Israel's name to 'Totally Not Israel, Guys' and remove any explicit reference to the 'Jewish State' (while continuing all the policies that make it that) and then proudly tell Hamas that Israel has been 'overthrown.'" |

Actually, it is very relevant to the point of this thread, which way back when, started with an article about the need for mutual understanding. How the thread started? That was ages ago. At the moment, we're debating over two Israeli policies. Maybe when you've had to find shelter from incoming Hamas rockets while at work or in your apartment, as I have... Seriously? If you're trying to claim that personal experience of a bad thing is necessary to debate it, then you will leave yourself unable to condemn the Nazis (unless you're pretty old). ...or when you've met a group of Palestinians in Bethlehem who tell you what they really think of their leaders and of the Israeli leadership... OK, what do they believe? And on what basis do you extrapolate the beliefs of a population from the beliefs of several individuals who might not be representative? It just goes to show that no matter the "flavor" of extremist, they are all the same at the end of the day. My apologies. I didn't realise you supported Hamas. |

At the momentYour catchphrase for when you can't handle the fact that things in the past don't support your opinions. I'm not saying one has to have lived through an experience to comment on it, but you might feel differently if you've had to go through those experiences. It's fascinating to listen to one of my ulpan teachers, whose father was murdered while walking to work near Hebrew University and who is quite leftist in her politics, has to say about the recent prisoner releases, which included her father's murderer. I might have opinions about that whole situation, but what she says about the topic will carry far more weight with any rational person than anything I have to say. |
