BJ’s is progressing Story By: LINDA LEUZZI, 06 February 2014 Richard Birdoff, a partner of Al Rosenberg at RD Management LLC in New York City, answered questions via email to the Advance regarding the proposed BJ’s Wholesale Club on the south side of the Sunrise Highway Service Road off Station Road in Bellport. Site plans were filed with Brookhaven Town in February 2013. The 87,788-square-foot retail store will occupy 10-plus acres on the former Bellport Outlet Shopping Center site on Station Road. According to Birdoff, 23.78 percent of the site will be pervious. There will be trees planted along the Sunrise Service Road wrapping around to Station Road by the Royal Oak Diner and Martha Avenue. BJ’s will be the sole retail store on the parcel. Advance: How many people does BJ’s plan to hire locally? Birdoff: BJ’s expects to fill 80 part-time and eight full-time positions. BJ’s will give priority to job seekers from the local community. The company will accept applications for the Bellport site on CareerBuilder.com and Monster.com as well as BJ’s career site called Careersmovehere.com. Advance: What store management positions will be available? Birdoff: BJ’s intends to hire 10 to 15 managers for Bellport. The management team will comprise residents in and around Bellport as well as managers from other BJ’s locations. Advance: What specifically will BJ’s sell at this location? Birdoff: BJ’s will offer members significant savings on groceries and general merchandise, including premium consumer electronics and brand-name appliances. Additionally, the club will feature a fresh bakery, full service deli, optical services and a tire bay. Advance: Will there be a trailer on-site? Birdoff: There is already a construction trailer on the site; we are checking with BJ’s as to whether they will have a hiring trailer on-site, but in any event we are advised that, as indicated above, BJ’s will give priority to applicants from the local community. Advance: How many construction workers will be on-site? Are they local hires? Birdoff: There will be approximately 150 to 250 construction workers employed at the site at various times. Stores like Nike, Maidenform, Welcome Home, Marty’s Shoes, 9 West, Van Heusen and Liz Claiborne were operating then and Rosenberg said in a previous interview that the shopping center had a 50 percent occupancy rate. Those businesses wanted to stay, he said, but wanted others to come. But the Tanger Mall, which opened in Riverhead in 1999, began taking its toll, and Rosenberg couldn’t attract more businesses. The property was eventually fenced in to prevent vandalism; former Brookhaven Town Supervisor Mark Lesko termed it a Blight to Light site. Councilwoman Connie Kepert, who had been working for at least three years on getting BJ’s into the community, commented she would have liked to have a hiring trailer on-site. “But if we get the word out where people could apply via the websites through the Advance, that’s a good thing,” she said. “The big fight was to give preference to those residents in the Bellport area in need of jobs so I’m very happy to hear that they will. We want to make sure that this will go as planned, and we’ll meet with [Greater Bellport Coalition chairman] John Rogers, the Boys and Girls Club of the Bellport Area, the Bellport Hagerman East Patchogue Alliance and the South Country School District to get the word out. We worked hard on the site plan so my focus is getting as many jobs for the people of Bellport as planned.” Former BHEP executive director Helen Martin, who supported Kepert’s efforts, said BJ’s commitment sounded great. “I hope they can find the quota of people from the community,” she said. “I would also hope they train the hires for the managers’ jobs. We need that and it’s in walking distance.” |

It has nothing to do with how many people will be working in the store at any given moment....the point is that the VAST majority of the workers that will operate the store will be part timers. It doesn't matter if there will be 20 in the store at any given time or 45 at any given time. The majority of the workers WILL be part timers. And that is stated right in the article. If there was a benefit to having FULL time workers they most definitely would have full time workers. But there is a benefit to having PART time workers there, and stores like this, so it's in their best interest to hire part timers instead of full timers where the full requirements for employment would have to be met. This is not unique to BJ's, just an average example. As for the size of the store, it fits well within average.
I had to use Sam's Club, which is a similar type of store, as when I tried different searches for BJ's, it kept giving how long the "average BJ takes", and I wasn't going to shift through that nonsense to get to the average BJ's store |

An interpretation cannot be false. It can be correct or incorrect. The rationalizations put out by the left may be true but they are not desirable and likely harmful to the economy. I don't see how people stopping working all together or cutting their hours to maintain larger subsidies for their health care helps the economy. The theory that others will be lining up to fill those hours is contradicted by the premise that in the utopia created by obamacare, we'll all be free to prance around our gardens blissfully chasing butterflies while someone else magically pays for our healthcare.Not surprising at all was seljerk's deliberate distortion that this would mainly be 62 year olds who could now leave and collect social security because with the subsidy, they could keep their medical coverage until 65 when they get medicare. The true impact will be felt when employers cut hours from 40 to 30 so that they can call their workers part time and not provide health care coverage. These people will not only have their wages cut but they will qualify for all manner of unearned benefits like food stamps, HEET rtc. all paid for by the "makers" whose tax bills will expand exponentially until they figure out that its cheaper not to work. Hence, noy king obama is contemplating pushing back the employer mandate back past the 2016 election. Does that sound like he's so confident that this law will help the economy. Sooner or later, the left is going to figure out that its not Bush's fault or Fox's fault but their own fault. |

The GOP generated the headline that folks were going to get kicked out of their jobs. That is not at ALL what's going on their analysis of what effects there would be. The CBO report states quite clearly that many will LEAVE the workplace voluntarily now that they have insurance coverage until they're old enough for medicare and that others would take their place.As to part time, that's what ALL businesses have been doing lately for flexibility and having people on hand if more hours are required as the economy eventually improves. Part time people can expand to fuller time without having to hire new or training them when the demand goes up. Lrn2economics, bro ... |
