Rushton & Jensen wrote this paper as a point-by-point critique of the book Intelligence and How to Get It by Richard Nisbett, in which Nisbett doubts race differences—and individuals differences for that matter—in intelligence and the heritability of such. As such, Rushton & Jensen wrote this paper with Nisbett's words followed by their own rebuttal. What you quoted was Nisbett's (erroneous) claims about the connection between brain size and intelligence, which Rushton & Jensen in their following segment debunk, which summed up says:1. Individuals with bigger brains do have higher IQ's than their siblings. 2. The size of Einstein's brain was measured after his death at 76 years of age! Brains shrink in adulthood so the comparison is misleading. 3. The short Ecuadorians do not perform better than their normal size compatriots but about the same. Besides, in addition to smaller brains, they also have smaller bodies, so their level of encephalization (brain size relative to body size) is the same. The last paragraph you quote was the beginning of Rushton's & Jensen's response, which pretty much explains the situation with brain size and its relationship to intelligence. |
