I left NYC ("escaped") because I no longer want to live in an urban enviroment. I like open space (I have a few acres, and most of the lots on my block are large). I don't like living on top of people. I like being able to come home at any time of the day or night and not have to worry about parking the car, I just pull into the driveway. I like grass instead of concrete.
That said, while I lived in Ridgewood, it was probably about 95% white (I also lived in Bushwick a very short time, but near the Ridgewood border). I moved to a "suburban" area who's community stats wera at the time about 65% white. (Mostly because of the neighborhood that is part of my community, but is across the railroad tracks).
You probably wouldn't last a day in the deli I buy my breakfast sandwich in some mornings, just across the tracks... Your average person from some lily-white community would be rocking in their boots. But it's way better tasting bacon/egg/cheese than any of the delis in nearby "not as questionable" locations.
I have never had any problems....the worst thing that ever happened to me was I was once called a "cracker" by some 4 year old Black kid on a bicycle. It was more funny (in a sad way) than anything I would need to worry about.
