It now looks to me like the argument between management and labor might have been merely an aside, like sailors on a sinking ship arguing with a captain over what their share of the profit ought to be; however that's resolved, the ship is still going to sink. That said, it seems open to discussion, and even likely, that wage and benefit issues accelerated the inevitable sinking. Management and labor lock in a mutually beneficial arrangement when things are going well, and then things begin to tank, said arrangement is no longer so mutually beneficial. This is somewhat reminiscent of GM's deal with employees to offer a better deal than Ford back when it was at the apex of American industry. But then as GM lost touch with which products people wanted, and faced new competition from foreign manufacturers in sectors of the market that GM had not even fathomed the existence of, the path was paved for those foreign outfits to eventually challenge the core of GM's business. And that happened. Right now I would hope that GM isn't just going to churn out the same crap at the same margins with a better ad campaign. And while management was probably the source of GM's troubles, that doesn't mean that labor should after the company's bankruptcy be immune to a summer haircut. |
