How was it going to end without massive government support?

It was "massive government support" that prolonged it. Getting out of the way of the private sector was what would have ended it—and history shows that they got in the way of the private sector massively, and that impediment was only removed by the war. You don't cure poisoning with more of the causative poison.

You think the Great Depression would have ended if the government did nothing but let free enterprize (sic) to the work. Well history shows that between late 1929 to early 1933 things only got worse

It shows no such thing. Not to mention, government interference caused the Depression in the first place—particularly the move to raise interest rates (sound familiar?) to quash so-called market speculation. Hoover himself had lots of government relief programs that made the depression worse. Not to mention, industrial production was repressed under the New Deal.

Not to mention, people back then regarded taking government handouts as a disgrace. Congress' insistence on resisting Hoover's attempts to get the private sector up and running again are a big factor; they always pushed him into increasing government "assistance".
