A better measure than job openings would be comparing the year-to-year employment-to-population ratio.

You will note that SD remained constant from 2021 to 2022 at 66.8, whereas NYS increased from 55.3 to 57.7. The US increase was 1.6, so NYS' 2.4 increase isn't shabby. It's better than FL's 2.1, another of your model states.


Yes, it's good that New York's ratio has increased at a decent clip, though some of that is bounce back from the 2021's low ratio that was obviously a result of Covid. And New York is still lower than most states outside the South.* I'll admit that the trends are at least in the right direction.

* = IDK why some southern states are low

A worker in SD is: 3 times more likely to commit suicide; nearly 3 times more likely to be killed by a firearm; and 4 times as likely to be an alcoholic

I suspect that has something to do with the rural character of much of the state. The higher firearms death rate and presumably the suicide rate result from the fact that firearms are a much bigger part of people's lives.
