Each and every elector can choose or change their vote. That they haven't is just a matter of decent behavior on their part. I would hope that if someone managed to get through an election while having designs on upending our democracy, let's say for an example, to establish a "Christian Taliban" nation, the electors would be out last chance to prevent that from happening.
