Have You Ridden the M90 Bus? |
|
Posted by nh153 on Sun May 28 21:04:49 2023 We know there's an M9 and an M96. How about the M90? It doesn't run in Manhattan. It's in Brooklyn and Queens. I wonder why it is called the M90? Isn't there a sign for "M Subway Shuttle"?The M90 is the free shuttle bus for when MTA crews are working on the M subway tracks. This weekend, until early Tuesday morning, it's running from the Broadway/Myrtle Av. subway station on the J line to Metropolitan Avenue, the terminal for the M line. Like the B13 and the B20, it has to run on some narrow one-way streets. Sometimes I wonder how it gets between the parked cars on either side of 37th Ave. And it had a tough time making the left turn onto Fresh Pond Road, where the MTA subway repair trucks were blocking the sides of the narrow road. You'd think they'd have some consideration for the bus drivers trying to get through! |

The MTA is switching to having shuttle buses with actual route numbers for the purpose of making them available on tracking apps. From my observations: If the shuttle bus replaces a lettered subway (B-Division) like the L or M, then the shuttle receives that letter. D99 for the D train shuttle. J90 and J99 for the J train shuttle. L90, L91, and L92 for L train shuttles. M90 for the M train shuttle. Q90 for the Q train shuttle. D99 - Bay 50th Street Coney Island. J90 - Cresent Street to Jamaica-Van Wyck. J99 - 121st Street to Jamaica-Van Wyck. L90 - Lorimer Street to Myrtle-Wyckoff Avenues. L91 - Broadway Junction to Myrtle-Wyckoff Avenues, Express. L92 - Abingdon Square to FDR Drive. M90 - Metropolitan Avenue to Myrtle Avenue. Q90 - Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center to Prospect Park. If the shuttle replaces a numbered subway (A-Division), then the shuttle receives the borough letter. However, I've only seen the 7 train shuttle and nothing else yet. Q92 and Q93 for 7 train shuttles. Q92 - Times Square-42nd Street to 34th Street-Hudson Yards. Q93 - Queensboro Plaza to Vernon Blvd-Jackson Avenue. Now note: - The Q train and 7 train shuttles share the Q designation, one for being the Q train and the other for being (primarily) in Queens. - It just happens that the M train shares a letter with Manhattan. Tangentially, the B99, Bx99, and M99 were the late-night replacements for the subway during COVID. Most do appear on BusTime, but not directly on the website. On my Transit Tracker app, I can type them in only if they are running. https://bustime.mta.info/m/index?q=D99 https://bustime.mta.info/m/index?q=J90 https://bustime.mta.info/m/index?q=J99 https://bustime.mta.info/m/index?q=L90 https://bustime.mta.info/m/index?q=L92 https://bustime.mta.info/m/index?q=M90 https://bustime.mta.info/m/index?q=Q90 https://bustime.mta.info/m/index?q=Q92 https://bustime.mta.info/m/index?q=Q93 |

You're right. 67th Avenue. And GojiMet86 is right in his response below. If you punch M90 into the Bustime website, you can see the route. https://bustime.mta.info/#m90 |

To find the route in "bustime.mta.info" or a similar app, you need a letter and number. They're not equipped to find the "M Subway Shuttle."However, I noticed this past weekend that A Subway Shuttle buses in Upper Manhattan did not have numbers. I guess the MTA is still working this out. Eventually all the shuttle bus routes that are activated when work shuts down a section of subway will get a letter followed by a number. |

Instead of assigning letters based on borough or train letter, and numbers limited to the 90-99 range, I would have chosen a standard letter for temporary shuttles -- S is taken by Staten Island, but T is available -- followed by a sequence number which is not limited in range. Just increment the number every time a new temporary shuttle service is created. The 90-99 range might be useful for regular routes at some point. I was even thinking about renumbering the Queens routes with numbers above 100, something like this: Q100 -> Q71 (because Q70 is taken) Q101 -> Q61 Q102 -> Q62 (could be confusing w/B62 near Queens Plaza) Q103 -> Q63 Q104 -> Q68 (because Q64 is taken) Q110 -> Q90 Q111 -> Q91 Q112 -> Q92 Q113 -> Q93 Q114 -> Q94 There's no practical reason for this; it's just more elegant to get rid of the three-digit route numbers. |

There are some past shuttles that didn't use the specific train letter or number and used just the borough letter:B91 - L Train tunnel shutdown shuttle. B91A - L Train tunnel shutdown shuttle. B92 - L Train tunnel shutdown shuttle. B98V - Vaccine site shuttle from the Pink Houses to Medgar Evers College. Q98V - Vaccine site shuttle from Edgemere to York College. M191 - The 191st Street station (1) train shuttle, designed to bring people down the hill. https://bustime.mta.info/m/index?q=B91 https://bustime.mta.info/m/index?q=B91A https://bustime.mta.info/m/index?q=B92 https://bustime.mta.info/m/index?q=B98V https://bustime.mta.info/m/index?q=M191 These two below were planned for the late-night COVID subway shutdowns (like the B99, Bx99, and M99), but were never put into service. However, the MTA did make destination signs for them: B201 - Columbus Cirle to Canarsie-Rockaway Parkway (L) train station. B202 - East Midtown to Canarsie-Rockaway Parkway (L) train station. |

Yes, from my experience living in that section of Washington Heights-Inwood (1966-1998), Fairview Avenue is situated on a narrow curved road that is severely steep. So is Fort George Hill between Dyckman Street and Saint Nicholas Avenue, plus West 187th Street as a westbound one-way street between Wadsworth Avenue and Broadway.-William A. As I recall it was a way to get people in the Marine Park area of Avenue U to the Brighton Line when Ave U Station was shut down. Both "Brooklyn" and "Kings" seem to have been represented on that designation, as I can't come up with where else K would have come from. |

I am not aware, nor have I checked it out, nor have I seen other people point it out.But it will be something to look out for, because it never even occurred to me. I'd be curious if they use the standard S for Staten Island, or perhaps SI (perhaps similar to the express SIM buses that have SI for Staten Island), or just SIR for Staten Island Railway. |
