[PHOTOS] NYC Buses - Back In Time |
|
Posted by Bill Newkirk on Sun Jan 8 15:53:17 2023 So you can reminisce about the buses and advertisements. #81 at Williamburg Bridge Plaza #104 in downtown Brooklyn on a hot day (all windows open). Is that the post office building behind the bus ? #774 at East NY Depot. Anyone remember LaRosa pasta ? #2055 - Any idea which location this is ? #4715 in a very bad accident, possibly crashing into an "el" pillar. #8088 brand new with air conditioning and "bat wing" advertisements. #8803 on the B-34, location unknown. Movie shoot utilizing a GM Fishbowl. Did Ulmer Park depot hold an open house in 1963 ? Brand new #3850 posing for a photo with local families. |

Every time I see new photos like this I see something I haven’t seen before. For instance in this batch the number 81 is painted green like the body instead of gold. And I’m the last one that ad on the front of the bus is about half the size as you’d normally see to accommodate the GM plate. So since I wasn’t around in the 60 when these photos were taken, it’s new to me. |

I know that at least prior to 1968, Fishbowl exteriors had two small ad racks in the rear section after the rear (center) exit door, and sandwiched on each end of the rear wheel section; when between then and 1969 would the very rear ad racks have been removed? But the 81 bus with the green type used a serif font that was once omnipresent on the exteriors of Fifth Avenue Coach and New York City Omnibus livery (to spell out bus numbers), and would have come to the TA via MaBSTOA after that agency took over all the Fifth Avenue Coach Lines and Surface Transit routes in 1962. |

As pointed out before, there was little or no confusion possible between Brooklyn and Queens route numbers. The only two shared numbers that touched one another were the B53 on Metropolitan Ave. and the Q53 on Woodhaven Blvd. - and the Q53 didn't even stop at that intersection. Plus the buses were of different colors since the Queens route was a Triboro bus. |

As stated the last time this topic came up, the closest was the B35/Q35, but even then the didn’t connect directly and were still some distance apart, so I doubt there was ever any confusion. |

And since displaying the borough prefixes on roll signs exposed the massive route number duplications in Manhattan, that was followed up by the extensive (and long overdue) renumbering of Manhattan routes in 1974?. |

The Elmhurst crosstown, meanwhile, was now QM16 - which likewise was duplicative of GBL's Rockaway Park-Manhattan express route. |

If I am not mistaken, 81 was delivered to NYCTA in 1959 with gold fleet numbers and white lettering above the windows. Early repaints of those buses had light green lettering above the windows and stencil painted fleet numbers not unlike the old look repaints. The gold decals came back in later repaints. |

Based on the spacing of the TA script on top, this was a repaint, ergo the '81' numerals on at the point that photo was taken replaced the gold leaf numerals (which dated back to Brooklyn Bus and B&QT days, even so far as their numbers displayed on the exteriors of Peter Witt streetcars, and whose use continued up to the point the 'M' logo was replaced in 1993-94 with the angled 'MTA' logo used for New York City Transit/New York City Bus/Bus to the present day) originally on it.What you call "painted on" numbers, as I said, would have been, pre-1962, exclusively on FACO, NYCO and Surface Transit divisions' bus fleet. (ST, especially, since Fifth Avenue Coach Lines acquired it back in December 1956.) They too were decals, and up to the 1940's were also gold leaf. |

I saw, among the pics out there, a TA bus #51 in a 1972 pic running the M-15 First and Second Avenues line, with the same green numbering. Also originally, the whitish-green lettering above the windows were closer spaced between words. |

Yeah I remember noticing that on an old Bronx bus map (as well as the baffling lack of bus service on White Plains Road south of Morris Park Avenue, and many branches of the Bx40 in Throgs Neck back then), and it really seems like they renumbered it to the Bx3 for no reason. They could have renamed the Bx3 during the recent redesign too since there are a lot of free route numbers available in The Bronx, but I guess they figured it wasn't the effort. |
