What was the purpose of terminating the S51 late nights in the middle of nowhere, however? 2. Was West Shore Plaza open at the time, or was the S62 to The Teleport as close as service came at the time? Information is appreciated. |

For no. 1, my take is the S74 and S78, and the SIR, were the alternatives for the S51 at night. It seemed like the MTA wanted to provide Father Capodanno Boulevard service at night but didn't want to give too much overnight service to Grant City, so they simply cut it back to Kiswick Street, which is in walking distance from Hylan Boulevard. For no. 2, I can't find any info saying when the West Shore Plaza opened, but if it had opened in the early 1990s, buses probably did not serve it until later on in the decade. As a matter of fact, the next bus map I have is March of 1998 which shows S46s serving the Teleport and regular service to West Shore Plaza, therefore removing the S62 permanently from the Teleport. Hope this helps. |

X1 and X10 service didn't run on Saturdays, and when it did run on Saturdays X1 service was every 30 minutes whereas X10 service was every 60 minutes. A lot of the express bus frequency during the rush hours was every 15-20 minutes as well (even the X1), although some routes like the X15 was every 10 minutes. There was also no X13; the X14 had split service in which one did the Downtown Loop (which the X13 did until the cuts) while the other went to Midtown (via West Street in the morning to Midtown, and via the FDR Drive in the evening to Staten Island). There was no X11 service; the X10 had three services; one operated between Travis and Downtown (today's X11), the other operated between Port Richmond (which the X10 does to this day) and another operated between South Gannon Avenue and Downtown. The X31 originally terminated at the Staten Island Mall. The X17 did not operate on weekends but had bi-directional service on weekdays, with off-peak service operating every 45 minutes. Last, but not least, no express bus service operated via the Goethals Bridge. |

I bought this map for $11 (shipping included)...some I've been lucky with and only bought them for as little as $2 or $3.In the near future I'll scan them completely for others to see. |

Something about the bus renumbering:"All Staten Island bus routes have been renumbered to identify either the region the route serves or the type of service it provides. The new numbering system is easy to understand and provides important service information." Bus Route Number - Region Served or Service Provided S40 Series - North Shore (S40, S42, S44, S46, S48) S50 Series - Cross Island (North to South) (S51, S52, S53, S54, S55, S56, S57, S59) S60 Series - Victory Boulevard (S60, S61, S62) S70 Series - South Shore (S74, S76, S78) S90 Series - Limited-Stop (S91, S92) |

What was the purpose of terminating the S51 late nights in the middle of nowhere, however?"A lot of the service patterns date back to the 1960s and the TA just stuck with them I guess. The Midland/Kiswick terminal was pretty strange, buses had to use two narrow streets, Kiswick and Moreland, to turn back onto Midland. The old S111 (now the S57) had some runs terminate at Hylan Blvd & Guyon Avenue, using Adelaide Ave & Clawson Street to turn back onto Guyon. That required a tight right turn from Adelaide onto Clawson. The trend today seems to be to remove buses from residential streets where feasible. The S111 also had various odd routings around the New Dorp SIR station, not the simple loop around using Rose Avenue like today. |

What was the routing & when was it discontinued?"According to Motor Coach Age of March 1973, the 105 ran from Richmond Terrace & Jewett Avenue to Seaside Blvd (today's Father Capodanno Blvd) and & Sand Lane and was abandoned on 11/3/65. The route above McClean Avenue was pretty much covered by the R7. Here's a 1954 map of the routes in that part of the island. |

From the looks of this map, and seeing that there's no 7 on it, I'd say the 105 became the 7. It's following the exact path as far as Hylan Blvd. |

So the S51 did use to serve the South Beach Housing Projects, I wonder why it stopped. Todt Hill & South Beach have got to be the two most transit-depraved projects in the city (The S52 takes too long to get to the ferry, it would probably just be quicker to hike up the hill to Hylan Boulevard & catch the (R) train). |

Yes, the 51 used to run through the streets of South Beach along the same route the 52 currently uses. The 51, prior to this change, had three different terminals, and three different routings; two of which went to the same terminal, depending on time of day. This change simplified things greatly. The 52 has been so abused. It absorbed the 5, part of the 42, and a section of the 51...the only part of its route that's the same from when it was the original 104 is along Tompkins Ave and Fingerboard Rd. |

You were right, it did and the 116 covered the western portion of the route. |
