Yes, the 51 used to run through the streets of South Beach along the same route the 52 currently uses. The 51, prior to this change, had three different terminals, and three different routings; two of which went to the same terminal, depending on time of day. This change simplified things greatly.

The 52 has been so abused. It absorbed the 5, part of the 42, and a section of the 51...the only part of its route that's the same from when it was the original 104 is along Tompkins Ave and Fingerboard Rd.
