"1. What was the purpose of terminating the S51 late nights in the middle of nowhere, however?"

A lot of the service patterns date back to the 1960s and the TA just stuck with them I guess. The Midland/Kiswick terminal was pretty strange, buses had to use two narrow streets, Kiswick and Moreland, to turn back onto Midland.

The old S111 (now the S57) had some runs terminate at Hylan Blvd & Guyon Avenue, using Adelaide Ave & Clawson Street to turn back onto Guyon. That required a tight right turn from Adelaide onto Clawson. The trend today seems to be to remove buses from residential streets where feasible. The S111 also had various odd routings around the New Dorp SIR station, not the simple loop around using Rose Avenue like today.
