Those had to be basic rosters but I remember more odds and end buses at Fresh Pond. There were a bunch of 1st generation GM New Looks at FP until sometime early 1974. Manhattan (126 St.) also had many odds and ends as well.This January 1, 1973 roster lists the 62/6300's. Somehow I remember, though I may be wrong, that the 62/63/6900's arrived later during 1973 and the 7000/9000 series Old Looks were retired when they arrived. Thanks for posting, keep em' comming. |

I was living in Illinois from June 1971-June 1974, but I came back to NYC at Christmas time (once for Easter) and summers. I don't remember seeing the 7000/7100 Flxibles until I arrived back in NYC for good on 6/22/74. They definitely weren't around during Christmas 1973. Same for the 6000/6100s, didn't see them until April 1972. |

You're right.I just noticed that at the bottom of the roster page there were 100 GMC 5301's (the 9000/9100 old looks) in storage. They are listed as 1959's, but I thought they were 1958's ( with the 7000's from 1957). Naturally many ran to make service requirements. Here's another one: I always was under the impression that 501-805 were 1959's. Oh well! |

We are probably correct about the 62/63/6900's arriving during 1973. The last of the Old Looks were replaced by those.The 7000/7100 series Flxibles did arrive during 1974, I believe they replaced the 1st generation fishbowls (1-190). I think the 6000/6100's arrived early 1972. I may have seen these (which were the first two tone blue buses) before the older fleet had the two tone blue repaint. |

In the years between '76 and '80, I saw double digit Fishbowls on the 79th Street Crosstown buses. They were notable to me because of their very low numbers, i.e. 11, 14, 39. I was surprised to see buses with anything less than 4 digit numbers as that was pretty typical back then. But in the late 70's, I did see them more than once as I was driving a medallion cab. FWIW - I only saw Fishbowls with those very low numbers in Mahattan on the Upper East and Upper West Sides. |

Here's a photo of NYCTA #68 on MABSTOA Bx12 at Pelham Bay Station taken by Joe Caronetti. The caption posted at the Bus Talk Galleries webite dates the photo around the early 80's. This bus has the orange license plates so it must be around 1974 or later. #68 was at Fresh Pond sometime around 1973. I don't recall when this series left FP but I know they weren't there after 1974. I guess some of these lasted a bit longer than I thought. |

You'll see the other 18 were at KB. Looks like the last 10 (3211-3220) were air conditioned, but my gut tells me that it wasn't very reliable! Also officially listed in storage were 90 GMC model 5106's from '58 & '59 for a total of 192 in storage. For the non air conditioned '65 model: 6701-6900 had wings. I thought 8301 and up were '67's but I guess they were ordered in '66 so that's why they are called '66's. Of course all these had "wings" with a/c, if it worked! I especially appreciate the Bronx depots.In '73 I was just 7 years old, but by the 1976/77 I pretty much had COL, KB and WF fleets memorized pretty well. Looks like a few of the newer buses moved around before pretty much settling for the next few years. I know that with the '69 Flxibles 4721-4727 eventually went to HUD. GMC 5309A 4833-4859 went to COL, 4813-4819 went to KB and all of the next group (4860-4919) went to KB. |

The West Farms Depot was located at 1825 Boston Road at 175 Street. It consisted of two buildings one of which I believe is still standing though abandoned and unused. The Coliseum Depot was located at 1100 East 177 Street and Devoe Avenue. The Coliseum Building was torn down and replaced by the new West Farms Depot on the same site. B53 Rich informs us that the date of this roster has the bus assignment for the opening of the then brand new Queens Village Depot. The property (and the actual building?) was the property of the former Duggan's (could be one "g") Baking Company. Sadly when that company went out of business (in the 1960's?) several cousins of my late father lost their jobs.If you expected a new fleet, you're going to be sadly disappointed. Their total fleet was 246, with 105 (various from 1960 and 2100's from 1962) over 12 years old, with another 55 (5600 series Flxies) being 9 years old. Only 70 local and 16 expresses from 1970 and beyond. Rather than making wholesale re-assignments from throughout Brooklyn and Queens, the first QV fleet came from Flushing and Jamaica. As with the NYCTA Roster from 1/1/74, various depots had beese from 1960, with no specific fleet numbers assigned. There were 131 of these active, with 50 listed in storage. The roster notes that Fifth Ave. assigned bus 6948 was converted to hard seats. Continuing with our bus roster series, today the first production "Kneeling Buses" are now in service: Flxibles 7500-7659. All depots got them, Flushing got 10, everybody else got 15. This was a chance to see which depot really took good (or bad) care of their buses.Quick story: "my" depot was Crosstown and we had 7530-7544. In contrast, Staten Island had 7630-7644. Naturally I compared them in my head. Once day I got on an S1 (or R1) at Port Ivory, bus 7630, a bit "newer" than 7530 from XT. It was already badly beat up inside and out and filthy on the inside. Never did ride it tho: b/o gets on and tries to start it: dead as a doornail! With this assignment, Crosstown became the first depot with an all air-conditioned fleet on paper. They really tried, but there were many failures with the "winged" 1966's. My favorite air conditioned ones were the 6310-6329 series, they really pumped it out! The 305 buses from the 1960 model year (501-805) are just about retired, with 111 in storage. Herewith the goods: ENY: 3841-3884 (44/'63), 4158-4202 (45/'69), 4300-4341 (42/'70), 6140-6163 (24/'71), 7030-7069 (40/'73), 7500-7514 (15/'75). Total: 210.
