I think there are several things you did not explain clearly enough for me to debate appropriately. No offense.

You seem to be quite hung up on this belief that improving or attempting to improve surface mass transit in this city is automatically tied to changing the character of a neighborhood (you made a statement to this effect at the beginning of our previous marathon debate); I am not sure how many people agree with you on that. I also wonder what "changing the character of a neighborhood" means to you.

I should just make it clear that making neighborhoods unfairly unaffordable is not something I agree with. (I am aware of the business with the shrinking middle class.) However, I do not think that this should be used as a reason to not improve the speed of surface mass transit [to the extent that passengers save significant amounts of travel time and use of non-private auto modes, such as buses, trams, and bicycles increases while private auto use either decrease or remains the same].

Furthermore, if you are implying that this is where the problem lies, it is probably all the more reason to show people that many situations can be reasonably de-private automobiled so that they either no longer or never have to worry about the expense of owning or using a private automobile and might be able to put their money to use in other ways. This could be one way to decrease socioeconomic inequality, if decreasing income inequality is important to you (not too much, since we do not want a communistic society)..
