You seem to be quite hung up on this belief that improving or attempting to improve surface mass transit in this city is automatically tied to changing the character of a neighborhood (you made a statement to this effect at the beginning of our previous marathon debate); I am not sure how many people agree with you on that. I also wonder what "changing the character of a neighborhood" means to you.I use a much thinner brush than that. In Harlem, the majority of the people (even car owners) would have no problem with a full length bus lane on 125 Street. What you are running into are PROPERTY interests and busybodies who think they know better for Harlem than everyone else. In this case, cars are not involved...at all. The car is a bystander in a major power struggle here. Furthermore, if you are implying that this is where the problem lies, it is probably all the more reason to show people that many situations can be reasonably de-private automobiled so that they either no longer or never have to worry about the expense of owning or using a private automobile and might be able to put their money to use in other ways. This could be one way to decrease socioeconomic inequality, if decreasing income inequality is important to you (not too much, since we do not want a communistic society).. Harlem residents are not overly attached to their vehicles. They do not need to be shown how to use mass transit. They need their "leaders" to get out of the way of better mass transit. |
