This is real sad news. As a bus driver and streetcar operator I can attest to the number of low-lives out there in every city. I've lost count of how many times I was threatened by a customer over something silly as a $2.75 fare. I agree with the posters above in saying the safest way to drive is to ignore the fare completely.

Thankfully the TTC is finally moving to install partitions on the buses and streetcars to prevent customers from being able to contact operators.

As a subway operator I really don't feel much safer... sticking your head out the window while guarding opens you up to all kinds of threatening behaviour, and we've had many operators receive knocks on the head or saliva in the face because some crackpot was angry that they missed the train.

My thoughts are with this operator and his family. May he rest in peace.
