The Jewish Woman Shortage

Over the past few years I have been nursing a theory that it is virtually impossible for a single, non-religious Jewish male to find a decent Jewish bride, much less a Jewish girlfriend. Although it is very hypocritical on so many levels for a non-religious person wanting to marry within their own religion, there are still many thousands of families and individuals that, for some reason, believe that marrying outside the faith somehow disrespects the faith more than their eating a bacon cheeseburger at the diner for lunch on Saturday.

Keeping the math simple, there are 8.5 million people in New York City. There are approximately 1 million Jews.

Assume half of the Jewish population is male, that leaves 500,000 Jewesses.

Assume half of those remaining are Hasidic, ultra-Orthodox, or otherwise "accounted for" in committed to marrying within their sect, cult, or to the same degree of faith, and that leaves 250,000 Jewish females.

Of those remaining, there is, IIRC, a sixty-percent intermarriage rate. I still don't know whether the sixty-percent is off the top, or after the Hasidim are accounted for, but either way, the result is ominous. By my calculations, 150,000 Jewish women are intermarrying/interdating, leaving 100,000 Jewish women for men in my demographic to quarry, at least in this region.

And have you seen those 100,000? I've been to these Jewish singles meetings too many times to count. They're all there: The 40-year-old spinsters yammering at nobody in particular; the 50-year-old triple divorcee/widows (who probably nagged their husbands into wanting affairs/to death); lesbians; the castrating, man-hating career bitches; and the Prozac junkies. It's pathetic.

Say 75% -- a fair number -- fall into these classifications. That leaves 25,000 in the sphere of eligibles. Out of 4.25 million potential mates in the City of New York, 25,000 fit my, and many other, mens' specifications. 0.6% (six TENTHS of ONE PERCENT), or .0058, of the female population. And these aren't necessarily supermodels either.

Assume there are only 25,000 similarly-situated Jewish males remaining after the same exercises are performed -- an even pairing. As it is, we are dealing with searching for needles in haystacks to find our one out of 25,000 out of 4.25 million, but throw some Alphas in there, and some of the guys (but none of the women) will be assed out.

Peter . . . here's your homework: What is the ratio of "trophy" women to all women? I doubt it is as low as .0058 of the population. Mine is a REAL woman shortage!

Prior to marrying my shicksa bride over 35 years ago, I dated at least 3 Jewish girls. One I've lost track of. One is living in Tamarack, Fl. and the other is living in Phoenix, Az. I guess that I couldn't get with that whole JAP program. Neither of us were particularly religious in a formal sense. but we've always respected each other's traditions. Seems to have worked out okay.

Are you in need of a non-religious female of Jewish background in her mid-40s? By some strange co-incidence, I happen to know two that fit the description. AFAIK, both are currently unattached, have "real" jobs and come with no prior relationship "baggage" (ie, children). While neither are super-model quality, they don't suffer from the "two-bag-syndrome" either. On the down side, they do come with 20+ year-old friendships with me.

The last jewish girl I liked always sat next to me in mgmt class senior year. :(

I think what we have here is a diversification issue possibly. You had your Irish, Italian and jewish neighborhoods. Everyone was excited to find someone of their own kind and such. But with the mixing going on now, as in subdivision exurbian living. Outside of a school situation, how do you meet people of your ethnic preference? If I was looking for Irish women, it's not nearly as hard, but it's not as easy anymore either. As far as "white" diversification is anyway. I don't believe other groups will have this issue anytime soon.

It's a culture or social engineering thing that just sort of happened I'm thinking.

Moreso in places like Philly and Baltimore where people were "pushed" into the 'burbs. Haven't tried Miami, but until I'm super-rich, I won't be living there soon anymore.

Wouldn't intermarriage work both ways? I've never heard that Jewish women are more likely to marry outside the faith than are Jewish men. Maybe it's possible - for example, look at blacks, where the intermarriage rate for men is vastly higher than for women - but I probably would have heard something if that were true.

attend a little more. Let's face it, You want to marry a Jewish woman. Very well. attend services and get into social circles where such women can be found. From circulating at the Oneg Shabbat or Kiddush to joining a Jewish singles group, there are opportunities for someone who has the intellect and sense of humor you exhibit here. GO FOR IT. The shul is the place to start.

In some Hispanic circles, white man = green card/stable income and home. Black men may be more masculine, but racism would point the women towards white males. Just as an example, my family isn't hispanic, but my great aunt forced my grandmother and aunts to find the whitest men that they could find.

Besides, Hispanic is a very vague catagory ranging from white Argentines to black Dominicans to mulatto Puerto Ricans to mestizo Mexicans. I'm still amazed the Census came up with such bizzare classification. It's like lumping the French speaking peoples of the world and calling them the "Gaullic".

Maybe you should not be looking solely in the city. I went to law school on Long Island and now live there and can tell you that there are many non-religious Jewish girls out here. I went to law school with a lot of non-religious Jewish girls and many of them were very nice and pretty too.

I disagree with your assessment that 50% of the Jewish women are religious. That number is far lower. I read somewhere that of the approximately 5.5 million Jews in the entire United States, only about 1 million affiliate themselves with the Orthodox movement. As someone on the inside looking out, I'd say that even assuming that you're figure of 500,000 Jewish women is correct, less than 100,000 of those would be religious, probably far less.

As someone who exclusively dated Modern Orthodox Jewish women before marrying, I can tell you that if you think finding a nice Jewish girl is hard, finding a nice Orthodox Jewish girl is much harder. Yet, I managed to find one so I think you can find what you're looking for too.
