It was brought up by its parents, who were brought up by their parents, and it sees that something about that upbringing is not right, is archaic, or is otherwise detrimental to its happiness? That does happen, frequently. Children brought up in a particular religion often drift away when they become old enough to make their own decisions. Some will convert to other religions while more will simply become non-religious. And this works the other way too, with children brough up in non-religious families turning to religion, often of the fundamentalist variety, in adulthood.
