PRR commuter steam on the NEC

One of the long commuter trains running from Bay Head to Exchange Place. Either the Broker or the Banker; no indication of which. Location is Linden NJ; date is 04/23/1956. (Apart from concrete ties and CWR, high platforms and fewer freight sidings, not too much different about the NEC from 56 years ago, eh?)

So much the state of NJ chucked away. That train could've been going to Exchange Place today under diesel power; it'd be a sight to see Comets with a PL42AC sharing the PATH tracks to Journal Square.

What year did they abandon steam? This must be close to the end.

1957 was the last year for PRR steam, I believe.

Railroad Magazine had an article about 1960 about how the last PRR steam loco made its last trip running light under its own power to the 44th St. Engine House in West Philadelphia via Delair drawbridge in 1959.

Not freight, but the last 2 PRR passenger locos ran double headed light under their own power from South Amboy, N.J. via the entire length of the Camden & Amboy RR to Camden Terminal Engine house in late 1957.

The last steam locomotive was a B6sb 0-6-0, #5244, leased to a short line in NJ. Steam on PRR's own lines stopped running at the end of November 1957.
The last two K4's on the Long Branch were #612 and #830, which ran in the morning rush of November 4, 1957, and then deadheaded to Camden. This is per Don Wood's NY&LB book.
The last K4 to run in revenue service was #5351, a week later, on a Pemberton to Camden commuter run.
A few freight engines continued in service until the end of the month.

I am curious if anyone knows when the last M1 4-8-2 ran. It doesn't seem to be anywhere on the internet.

Nice pic there! "Broker" came to grief in Woodbridge in Feb '51 (with attendant loss of life). When I rode back and forth to Red Bank between '69 and '71, I believe the cars were of the Comet variety.

And therein lies the problem. Tens of thousands of commuters a day are forced to ride on an obsolete railroad singularly unsuited to the volume now using it.

That was the last steam powered scheduled passenger train on the PRR. A former co-worker was on it. He lived in Moorestown and worked at RCA in Camden. He said the passengers were surprised to find a doodlebug for their trip home.

amazingly the K4 involved in the broker wreck (2445) was repaired and returned to service, even though the scrapping of the K4's began in 1948.

wish i'd seen it. i rode behind 1361 on a very low-speed excursion over the old northern central in york, around 1987 maybe. it was a a bit of a letdown, and she was shut down not long after that. my first train watching time-machine stop would be the long branch in '55 or '56.

Unless, of course, you were unlucky enough to be working the night your engineer forgot about the slow orders due to a gauntlet put in for some bridge work on 2/6/5....

And now with ALPs and long MLV trains, we have returned to steam loco running time performance.

No. Steamers were way faster. Even with the K4s and E6.

An E6 Atlantic is borderline HSR. Those things could FLY.
