If you're going to do that, then it should be a rush hour line in both directions. The layups I can understand, but in the reverse peak direction outside Manhattan, the trains are likely to be empty. That's why I said Essex Street for peak direction only. |

Avenue C Cuphandle now!Instead of the crazy Avenue C Cuphandle it would be better to have a new service branch off the (L) at 14th St and go down Avenue C/Pitt St to E. Broadway and join the (F) into the Rutgers St tunnel and be a daytime express along the Culver Line. The (F) could be reduced to 10 TPH. It would be joined by a 6 TPH Orange (M) via Christie at Bway/Lafayette. These combined services would service Queens. Four of the six (M) trains would run express all the way to 179th. The (F) and (E) would flip Queens terminals. Two of the (M) trains would go to Jamaica Center. The (V) would also go via Christie and run local to Woodhaven Blvd after which it would turn north and "leap" unto the Old Rock and join itself at 63rd Rd and become a circular route. That would give 71st St the room to run the (G) there 24/7. |

Posted by Michael549 on Mon Jan 11 10:08:55 2010, in response to Re: Rush Hour Nassau Street train, posted by Wallyhorse on Mon Jan 11 02:28:08 2010. Again the problem with Essex Street is that the middle track, the track that would be used for trains to reverse direction, are NOW currently occupied by trains traveling across the Williamsburg Bridge to Brooklyn and Queens. Translation - it is not a good idea to reverse trains on a track where at the same time there are in-coming through trains.Either the Chambers Street station would have to be used for the peak direction only trains, or those trains are sent across the Williamsburg Bridge to be dealt with at Eastern Parkway, or Metropolitan Avenue. The Essex Street station would not be a good place to terminate and relay those peak direction only trains, while at the same time, merging and separating the M/V trains, the station only has three tracks. One at Essex Street is used for all downtown Manhattan bound trains. The middle track is NOW currently used for all J and M trains bound to Queens. At present I do not believe that there are switches to move these trains to the outer uptown side track. The uptown side track is not used, but would be used for the Williamsburg Bridge bound M/V trains. See the track map. Mike |

Mike there is a switch north of Bowery that can take a train from J 3/4 track(which would be the middle track) to J1 Track(the outside track) at Essex Street..Now if you are talking from the Chrystie Cut going towards the bridge there is no switch there.. |

There is a track map on NYCSubway.Org, and I am looking at my old copy of Subway Tracks of NYC, copyright 1999. On those maps, it appears that Jamaica and Metropolitan Avenue bound trains upon leaving the Chambers Street station is traveling along track J4, for example at the Bowery Station what would usually be called the downtown express track. This track leads directly into the Essex Street station as the middle track, then called J-3/4, at least in my book. The book that I have, and the Chrystie Street Cut map on NYC-Subway.Org seems to show that there isn't a track switch directly from J-3/4 to the outside track called J-1 (at least on my map). What I was trying to say was not that a train could not be reversed on J-3/4 back to J-2 and headed toward Broad Street. My point was that doing such a reversal of trains, in the midst of rush hours where trains are traveling frequently across the Williamsburg Bridge into Brooklyn and then Queens. All of the while downtown trains are traveling on J2 through to Broad Street, and elsewhere. It was about a mix of activities all at the same time. Mike |

Posted by straphanger9 on Mon Jan 11 13:19:57 2010, in response to Re: Replacing the M with V train, posted by SMAZ on Mon Jan 11 05:26:51 2010. No, what he means is that if you flip the south terminals of the (C) and (V) and you do NOT flip the south terminals of the (E) and (F) also, when a (C) train arrives at W4 at the same time as an (F), one train or the other must "go first" and the other must wait for that train to move in front of it.Therefore, other trains behind the one being held get delayed (in the case of the C letting the F go ahead, an E train is delayed - in the case of the F letting the C go ahead, a V is delayed). Those other trains get delayed for a minute or two. Because of the frequency of the service along these lines, that can be expected to happen several times an hour which would cause delays that are unacceptable to the level of service desired, as well as the running times desired. These delays will cause trains running late to have to be ordered to skip stops later along their runs, to keep service running smoothly and the trains spaced properly to avoid bunching and very uneven ridership patterns along trains that run the same route, which also cause delays. There is no avoiding that if the (C) and (V) switch south terminals. It's just the reality of "two trains cannot occupy the same space in one time" and the fact that it takes time for trains to go over switches and for the next train to receive the lineup onto the same track after the first train has cleared enough to begin moving the second train. |

The closed northern mezzanine at Hewes St. station is close enough to Union Ave to provide said connection. Broadway on the G has massive amounts of abandoned mezzanines/trackways that would minimize tunneling. |

Also what is wrong with that map, is that the former Queens "local" track no longer connects to Chamgers St to Canal. That is incorrect, that track is still connected to Chambers St. And of course, the extra switch, just dicussed, before Essex St allows trains from the current Queens track to access the far track at Essex St (near the trolley terminal), also not on the map |
