No, what he means is that if you flip the south terminals of the (C) and (V) and you do NOT flip the south terminals of the (E) and (F) also, when a (C) train arrives at W4 at the same time as an (F), one train or the other must "go first" and the other must wait for that train to move in front of it.Therefore, other trains behind the one being held get delayed (in the case of the C letting the F go ahead, an E train is delayed - in the case of the F letting the C go ahead, a V is delayed). Those other trains get delayed for a minute or two. Because of the frequency of the service along these lines, that can be expected to happen several times an hour which would cause delays that are unacceptable to the level of service desired, as well as the running times desired. These delays will cause trains running late to have to be ordered to skip stops later along their runs, to keep service running smoothly and the trains spaced properly to avoid bunching and very uneven ridership patterns along trains that run the same route, which also cause delays. There is no avoiding that if the (C) and (V) switch south terminals. It's just the reality of "two trains cannot occupy the same space in one time" and the fact that it takes time for trains to go over switches and for the next train to receive the lineup onto the same track after the first train has cleared enough to begin moving the second train. |
