There is a track map on NYCSubway.Org, and I am looking at my old copy of Subway Tracks of NYC, copyright 1999. On those maps, it appears that Jamaica and Metropolitan Avenue bound trains upon leaving the Chambers Street station is traveling along track J4, for example at the Bowery Station what would usually be called the downtown express track. This track leads directly into the Essex Street station as the middle track, then called J-3/4, at least in my book. The book that I have, and the Chrystie Street Cut map on NYC-Subway.Org seems to show that there isn't a track switch directly from J-3/4 to the outside track called J-1 (at least on my map).

What I was trying to say was not that a train could not be reversed on J-3/4 back to J-2 and headed toward Broad Street. My point was that doing such a reversal of trains, in the midst of rush hours where trains are traveling frequently across the Williamsburg Bridge into Brooklyn and then Queens. All of the while downtown trains are traveling on J2 through to Broad Street, and elsewhere. It was about a mix of activities all at the same time.
