That jives with my memories. The Jamaica R32's were cleaned first, in 1985, but the ones out of Coney Island remained covered in grafitti well into 1987. For a while there was such disparity in the equipment assigned to the Queens Blvd routes compared to the rest of the system that it made you wonder what made E/F/G/N riders so damned special. Things didn't start looking up until the R68's began arriving, first on the D, then the Q and finally the N.

I'm completely convinced that the last non-GOH R32 ran on the N in December '89, maybe early January '90.

The whole thing was a typical case of NYCT not listening to its' employees out in the field.

When the viaduct was first torn up, senior management was told that more work was needed to be done. But noooooooo. They were told to follow orders, that the budget wouldn't allow it. After the first project was completed, more money was appropriated "allowing" the original work to be excavated and the money spent on the first project literally thrown away.

Same here. I didn't like the way the R32s looked when the came back from GOH. The filpdot was a mistake, especially because it's hard to tell if it's an E or an F train until the first car passes you. Now, of course, that's not a problem because both lines no longer run R32s. Those flipdot signs got dusty very easily, making it hard to see the letter from a distance.

The overhead grab bars were another mistake, especially because they don't extend all the way to the doorways like they do on the other cars. So if you stand in an R32's doorway, the only thing you can hold onto is the grab bar at the end of the bench. They should have kept the metal straps on the 32s (they did on the Redbirds).

Can't wait to see them, especially because I rode these cars as a small kid and can't remember exactly how the subway the cars looked before they were GOH'ed.

True. quality of ride on the 62a's on the flushing line is horrible. The braking seems so inconsistant as they seem to grab & release very abruptly. Ive never noticed this discomfort level on any other line. The horozintal seating only amplyfies the effect. When u come into Rawson St enroute to Times Sq, for example, U r zigin & zagin so much that u look like a metronome. How Appropriate!

Slants were more numerous on the southern half of the M line (Bay Pkway-Essex St) during the 1988 Williamsburg bridge closure, but the given date of this pic is a good two weeks after service was restored. Perhaps the date is incorrect.

Anything is possible. I'm just trying to think of a reason why slants would be on the M in the latter half of June in 1988. Once the Williamsburg Bridge re-opened, all the slants and R32's that ran on the southern portion of the M went back to their regular routes (B, N).

My commute to high school was the 7 to the N to the uptown 6. Started in Sept '89. I'd catch a blue door r32 about 2-3 times a week for that 1st semester. Sometimes I got home pretty late from watching trains at Qboro. When Christmas break came, they were down to 2 trains, and when we started up again in January there were none.
