There's a laughable back story to those temporary platforms. Initially in 1985 they were introduced for a track replacement project meant to last 18 months (in practice it took a lot more). Within months of their removal and the restoration of express service, the Queens Blvd viaduct project began, forcing them to rip up all those new tracks. You'd think they's coordinate the two projects.
