As a rider, I won't miss the seats (and will continue to suffer from them with the R40M's still running on the E). But they were an unusual look, my favorite cars as a kid (when they first ruled the A) and they had the best RFW ever. |

First subway train I could ever remember riding was the R40 on the (F) in the mid 80s. This was definitely a unique looking train. Will never see trains like these again, all the new ones are identical clones. |

I suggested that the AA cars be used on the Rock Park shuttle, but TD implied that these would be assigned to 207 barn rather than Pitkin (although we don't know when, but sometime down the road) since 2/4 car units of 75' cars can't fit in that barn for inspection/troubles. An ABBA and AA will fit on a barn track fine. This is needed once all old 60' cars are gone.Sure they can be ran on the shuttle and swapped with an A train to make it's way up to 207 barn in service for periodic mileage inspection, but the problem comes in when an AAAA consist goes bad on the road in between inspection cycles (or in the case of 6207 a ABAA consist) and it has to go to the yard. Pitkin would not repair a car that belongs to 207, unless extreme emergency that the car can't get up there. There are barn space issues and more importantly budgets at work. Budgets to repair your own cars. Budgets that they don't want to send the Rock Park switchman to 207 since he'd be gone all day, or excessive overtime would be required if he has to go all the way up there if his shift was close to ending. |

I've mentioned before that there are 13 AA sets and 1 AB (6206/07) set in existance. Full service on the C is 18 trains. Therefore 6 car R46's will not operate on the C line. They will not operate some as 6 cars and some as 8 cars. You can frame this statement. |

I remember them when I was alittle guy, when they ran on the E & F. For me, they defined express service-- fast and loud. I still think the Salnt front makes them somehow more suited for serious express service- like QB or CPW without timers.I know there's no GOOD reason not to have run them on local runs, I'm just speaking of personal feelings here. |

I'm going to go for it on Thursday, and I have enough time, but I don't know if a new R46 arrival to Pitkin is retiring them tomorrow or something. Not a big deal at all though if they're being retired tomorrow night, since I already got my "last ride" in on Friday. |

Well the slants weren't my favorite cars but I did enjoy riding them on express runs. They were fun to ride at speed. The slants used to remind me of the BART cars due to their slanted ends. I wonder why the didn't build the R40s into 5 car sets? If they did, maybe there wouldn't be a need for the pantograph gates at the ends. :)I'm rather indifferent on the retirement of the R40 compared to the retirement of the R32 and R42s. Looking at them today with the duct tape and rust, it seems like their time has come. |

While the tape is euphemistically called duct tape because of its appearance, it is not. The tape in question is a heavy foil that is backed with an epoxy-based adhesive. It works extremely well when applied correctly but is quite a bit more expensive than duct tape. Now that you know what it is "not", I must admit that I can't recall what name it is sold under. That being said, I'd guess that virtually every reasonable person here understood what you meant when you referred to it as "duct tape". |
