The MJ sign couldn't be displayed since the Q cars had no roll signs

Couldn't they have chained it to the front like they did with the NX?

We used to call the LL the "lousy local" since by then the Standards were totally unreliable especially in cold weather. A lot of Arnines had the correct route letters added to the end signs but not the destinations on the Eastern Division (although Chambers St. of course would be there). However on many of them the side signs were ok.

That's also true for the R16's, they retained their 1969 signage until the end, so all the cars on the J either were signed as "JJ" or "QJ" since there was no single J. They also had no proper northern terminal signage after 1977, so it was either left blank, had "168th/Jamaica" upside down or was set to "Queens Plaza". What I never understood was why the cars that got the new 1985ish single lettered rollsigns also got "Queens Blvd" on it's northern terminal roll. They arrived just weeks before Queens Blvd was to be closed, thus assuring all R30/32 J trains would remain incorrectly signed for another 3.5 years.

Even as late as 1986 I saw an R46 sporting an EE sign on a diamond N run, to assure people knew the train was going to Whitehall, not Brooklyn. That's the way it was back then. Wrong signage, no PA announcements. You had to know what you were doing. Kids today are spoiled.

Not that it really mattered. Most of the roll signs were covered in grafitti anyway. It a train was moving you got on it. Regardless of where it was going.

That's what surprised me. The R-12s had the original cloth roll signs so Car Equipment could have easily painted out the word "Astoria" thus allowing the proper route designation to be displayed.

By the time the R-9s received new end route signs, it had become TA policy not to display destinations on the ends of trains since the R-40s and 42s no longer displayed them. The original IND end destination signs were retained however and merely turned to blank. When I was a M/M on the 14 St Line, I would turn the end sign on my Canarsie bound trips to read "Rockaway Park" since that was close to the actual side sign reading of Rockaway Parkway."

I don't know. I used to ride the southbound F at 47-50 late at night back then and just assumed they didn't bother to change the signs for merely three stops. And people riding the 63rd St. line just hopped on whatever train that came even though they sometimes ended up on the BMT Broadway line.

Weird thing about the remains of the Third Avenue El ... once it was down to 149/Gunhill, it wasn't a route that people would accidentally stumble on and expect to go somewhere. It was used exclusively by locals who knew where they were going, and so the route signs were pretty much meaningless anyway. If kids changed them around in the cars, they could often stay that way for weeks. So going to the effort of modifying the signage for the route with the few modified cars that ran there would have been a collosal waste of time and effort anyway. So it only made sense that they didn't bother.

It's all a matter of collecting infomation over a period of time. In most cases over the space of YEARS! You are cordually invited to explore the subways and find out these things for yourself. The infomation is out there.

I think I speak for most people in here by saying we'll give you basic inforation about bellmouths and double letters. But noone in here is going to give you or anyone in one shot what took us years to find out.

Don't take this the wrong way. You're asking questions we all asked when we were newbies in here.

From a previous message: "The MJ sign couldn't be displayed since the Q cars had no roll signs. Actually when Chrystie first opened, the M and LL still had steels running on them and they couldn't display the proper route designations either. I was only when the R-9s went to the Eastern Div that proper route signs were displayed."

Would it really have made much difference to the average rider if the LL trains (the steels mentioned above) did not have the route designation signs? The LL route did not mingle with any other train line for much of its history.

Mike

The only problem with the last logo is that, as per existing roll signs, the should be white on a brown background since it is a Nassau St route. Black on yellow is Broadway. Apparently even the MTA planners weren't as familiar as they should have been about the route designations and colors.

There was a brown R in 1987. It still is found R44/46 rollsigns.

And in it's last days it was mostly if not all decrepit grafitti-covered R16s. The brown "Nassau Street R" was to tell it part from the yellow "Broadway R".

It's still exists on the R44/46 front rollsigns because all the rollsigns were equipment interchangable, NOT because R44/46 ever ran on the Nassau R or any other eastern division line, period! (Except for one fantrip in 1976.)

From 1979-87 the Nassau St. R/RR was depicted as yellow. It only appeared as brown on one map (the May 1987 version) and NEVER on any signage while the route was still running (it was eliminated 6 months later).

No diamond R train ever used brown signage that exists today. ENY didn't get any of the equipment which had them installed until 1988.

The F terminated at 57th/6th for 2 years prior to the opening of 63rd. This was the era when 179th was served by both the G and R overnights, which led to many complaints. When 63rd St. opened, the F was simply extended to 21st St. It was always noted on maps and stations as the F all the way. There was a Q shuttle which ran from 21st to Broadway/Lafayette during evenings between the hours the Q to Broolyn ceased running (9 PM) and the B to 168th stopped running (midnight). Prior to 63rd St opening, 57th/6th was served by the JFK express which acted as a shuttle to 47-50th during these late evening hours.

So I'm not sure when or why this F/Q ever ran.

Also, wasn't signage on the LL at the time really necessary? The line made the same stops and shared track with nothing else. If you got on a westbound train at Montrose Ave, it could not be anything but an 8th Ave bound local.

It was nice to see the TA go back to the bulkhead destination signs, at least temporarily, in the 1980's on the R27-38 classes.
