After 73 years, NY Daily News finally discovers BROADAWAY G station tile error |
|
Posted by Newkirk Plaza David on Tue Feb 10 08:48:27 2009 NY Daily News story.WTF, the MTA should be blamed for a 73 year old mistake? Would a better story be about incorrect neighborhood maps or wrong G.O. notices? |

Yes, it's part of the charm like the famous stamps with the upside-down airplanes. There are certainly many MODERN station sign gaffes.Take the 1990s-era MTA sign in the mezzanine at 65/Broadway directing people to the stairs to Rowan Street. Never mind that Rowan Street is a defunct street name at the other end of the station that had a defunct exit leading to it. There are still a few original 1930s-era IND tile directional signs left on the platforms. But whose bright idea was it to order and install a new sign? There must be other street name mispellings on signs around the system. The Saint George ferry/bus terminal has a sign for the S42 via BRIGHTEN Avenue. Sorry, but it's BRIGHTON. |

And that mistake has been photographed before. To whit, an earlier photo, probably around 1999."Brodaway" name, Broadway Station, IND Crosstown Line. By the way, I just notified the NY Daily News' reporter about this topic in a bit more detail with some historical background (i.e. including when it was probably first installed before the station actually opened in July 1937), as well to NY1 News' "In Transit" show, where he is a contributing report there. My guess it could be one of those end segment topics mentioned in a future episode soon to air. -William A. Padron ["It's A Shame"] |

I just read the article, I didn't notice anyone being "blamed" for the error. And even it was the case, it's typical. Just like when people scream at the conductor about a previous train that they claim left early. Was that conductor on the previous train? Why scream at him? :-( |

A few years ago, I noticed a similar error on the south side of Elmhurst Street Station. Apparently some time in the past the original "8" tile of 82nd Street had been damaged and was replaced by a blank white tile. The result was that the sign directed people to "2 Street". I notified them of the error and they temporarily painted an "8" that looked like it was stenciled in the tile. I think that would have been good enough but they actually manufactured a real matching "8" tile which they installed three months later. Today, it looks like it always has been there. I didn't call the news media. Here's how it used to look:(Sorry you'll have to cut and paste the link. For some reason it just won't work.) http://fmmjqg.bay.livefilestore.com/y1p4LZtMnSFF8uwI3ROckEgm2VaJeRNVdRcnVxz68_cvrQcnKnnHU2xUxGzTihzWu_OCTAroW-lEvrUUiasD_-DrQ/Elm%20003.jpg |

Neat! It looks like more than just that is missing, as that whole part of the wall seemed to get messed up, as the bottom blue tiles of the mosaic are also different color blue, and the white tiles are newer. Also, It originally probably originally said "To 82 Street", as it's not centered with just "82 Street". Or worse still, sentences full of unexplained acronyms. I spotted this gem in the opening para of an article in the current edition of Today's Railways Europe: "Once owned by the legendary company CFD, the works is now part of VFLI, a subsidiary of SNCF." The CFD may have been legendary to the article's author, but I haven't a clue what it (or the VFLI for that matter) is. |
