I don't really know anything about the diaphragms, though the way they were described, i assumed they were hollow rubber ones like the usual ones.

No, because that's just as bad as the craptastic R44s we have now. New cars, similar to LIRR cars, are the best fit. We don't need so many doors, we need more seats. Hey, if they can make these R179 cars with fewer doors speficically for the SIR, that would work too.

Considering 5 doors, fully empty spaces for wheelchairs, and new emphasis on standees, I can't see how it can be anything other than straight bench ala R-160. I guess they could try an R-110B style seating.

Since the 8 less doors is a problem, then why can't the E use mainly 60' cars like it has been doing? Other lines which function perfectly well with R-46s such as the V and R would have no problem having R-179s with only 4 doors.

What door says Amtrak ??? the Flexliners tested in the US were not Danish other than by manufacturer, the cars Amtrak tested belonged to Isreaeli railways.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to have a modified version of the R-179s for use in Staten Island. Since the line doesn't demand quite the same kind of service as most of NYCT, it could probably function well with three doorways, possibly even single-leaf doors like the M-7s. In addition, seating similar to buses or Philadelphia's Market-Frankford El M4 cars would provide greater seating capacity.

Hehehe, I think so to, but I was referring to the design of the R-179s saying that there shouldn't be an absolute need for them to have 5-doors because of the dwell times on lines like the E. Those lines since they need more doors can just have 60' cars while the R-179s could be sent to other lines (like the R and V).

they probably would've been better off just moving the R40M, R42's to the E directly and kept the R32 phase 1's on the A/C lines.

It would seem easier to have done it that way. I wonder what the reasons were for doing it this way. Maybe so Jamaica could continue to maintain R-32s and not have to deal with different equipment. They do a bad enough job as is after all. :-)

Yeah, Jamaica being where all the R32's was a sound idea, I guess the a/c's all picked the wrong time to start crapping out. Imo, if it's that bad on the E then move it to the F or R.

Well true about that, but then again how many ppl stays near the doors rather than move to the center of the train? 5-door cars might not sound that bad and then you can run 75' car trains on the E.

If NYCT is really serious about OPTO for short trains, they should go for cameras that link directly into cab monitors, instead of having the engineer leave his position.

If that's the case, it'll make me smile. I would like to see the next generation of cars return "back to roots"-as in going more basic. A return to the traditional SMEE platform would be welcome, upgraded to date with AC traction and microprocessors. Remember the R62/68s went based on the R36 chassis and technology-basically modernized reworked R36s built in the 80s. A modern "2010" rework of the R36 would be great too with microprocessor controls, AC traction, ATO/CTBC and more.

Big deal, pretty much everyone in Israel has to serve in the army(even women), which AMERICA gives a lot of funding to. And it is an army which uses AMERICAN weapons. I'm sure you had fun. It's more of a suffix, but who is to draw the lines between a suffix and an inflection in a language? From another language stand point the "s" could well be seen as a suffix.

Someday I need to complete my Japanese half by learning the language...

Good luck. I had a hard time myself when I was ten, as I grew up in Paris, France from five to eleven, the full time Japanese School didn't open until the October right before my tenth birthday and it was hell for my year there and later in Japan. I survived it though.

You contradicted yourself here. I think you do have something against Jews. If you didn't, you wouldn't have posted this.

The Flexliner is used in Denmark, Sweden and Israel. The Flexliner that was tested in North America by Amtrak and VIA Rail just happened to come from Israel. What's wrong with that? Would you have gotten your jollies if Amtrak and VIA tested a train from Iran?

Which is exactly what we need to have here in the States. There need to be separate tracks for passenger and freight rail, where possible. It's time for the feds to stop treating rail like property and start treating it like infrastructure.
