LIRR East Side Access / Roosevelt Island F Station

I run a blog about Roosevelt Island and transportation off and to the island is getting more congested due to increased residential construction. The tram can only carry so many pasengers per hour and as we all know by the time the F subway train comes into Roosevelt Island from Queens during the high point of rush hour it is packed. What I wanted to ask you all is whether you think it is physically possible to create access to the LIRR east side access track which was built obviously below the current RI subway station such that RI residents could use this as a possible transportation link to the island?

I doubt the MTA would ever allow this but in the long run for Roosevelt Island it woudl be cheaper than trying to build a new station down to the existing E,V or N,R tunnels that also travel below Roosevelt Island.

Thank you, Eric

Um, no. Roosevelt Island is served adequatley by the F train, and it's hardly "packed" during rush hours.

No Chance. And BTW: LIRR Trains are already filled up too.

Your best hope is to build the new Queens Super Express, This will provide more trains, and reduce the crowding on the (F).

I can appreciate the comments about people complaining / whining. But my question was whether those of you that have any familiarity with how the tunnels were built believe it is possible to create access or would it run into some sort of construction issue that would make it impossible.

The closet example of what you are talking about would be the creation of the express platforms on the Lexington Avenue line at 59th Street. The express tracks exist below the local tracks, and when the station was originally created only the local trains stopped at the 59th Street station, the upper platforms. The heavy ridership at 59th Street, and the amount of riders transferring to local trains for that station was what prompted the TA to build the express platforms and other improvements.

I suppose it would really depend upon the method that was used to construct the tunnels of the 63rd Street line. While the underwater sections were built as units that were floated into position and sunk, I suppose that there would be a question about how the sections actually on Roosevelt Island were built.

It possible to create such a station, but it would take a great deal of blasting to carve out a new platform AND access.

This in and of itself would cost a large sum of cash, something I don't believe the MTA is prepared to deal with at this or any other moment in the future..

But nothings stopping you from forming a group to push the idea..with ENOUGH people involved..it just MAY have a chace at an honorable mention..which is saying alot..seeing how the FTA is penny pinching us as it is.

My advise to you is..take a shot at it..one voice can start something going.

If such a station were to be built, It would have to be accessed from the subway station platforms. There isn't really much of an alternative. All tickets issued for travel at the station house would be printed on MetroCard ticket stock, while tickets issued from platform level would be the regular ticket stock.

What makes you think the LIRR trains passing through 63rd St Lower Level tunnel would be any less crowded than the F? If the MTA goes and spends perhaps another billion dollar to build a station on the lower level tunnel you may find that it doesn't provide any better service. In that case instead of competing with commuters from Jamaica for seats on the F you'd be competing with commuters from Ronkonkoma, Babylon, Long Beach or other points on the LIRR.

Maybe Roosevelt Island should look into having a staircase or pedestrian elevator up onto the Queensboro Bridge pedestrian walkway installed to provide better off-island transportation and more direct access to Manhattan.

I understand and admit that any LIRR train would be crowded as are the F Trains but then at least individuals boarding at those two stops would have two options and those riders could be potentially absorbed by both systems.

Currently there are 12,000 residents on Roosevelt Islander. Five new buildings slated for or under construction will add another 3500 individuals at a minimum. Future development could add another 5000. One subway and one tram will never be able to absorb these numbers.

The option of LIRR access seems the most economical as the tunneling down at that width already exists as opposed to attempting new stations where the two other subway lines cross under Roosevelt Island.

The idea of direct access to the 59th Street Bridge via a staircase was dismissed by the DOT due to various excuses including security issues and landmarks status of the bridge.

Again thanks to everyone that responded. I am honestly trying to understand as much as possible.

Landmark status of the bridge?

That's a funny one. They used to have an *elevator* to bring *cars* from the bridge down to the Island. If they want to be hysterical let them re-build *that*.

12,000 residents? 5000 more residents? say 17,000 residents. And of those, how many will ride on the subway? OK assume *all* of them. That would only fill up ten trains. Put a few more trains per hour in there and you will have it made in the shade.

Besides, the (N) train *will* be going through there too as part of the Second Avenue Subway project. The (Q) will go up 2nd Avenue, and there will be no terminal at 57th Street any more. The (N) will run via 63rd Street and the (R) and (W) trains will run via the 60th Street Tunnel.

You are referring to what was known as the "Upside Down Building" because when you entered it from the QB you were on Floor #1 and the floor #'s rose as you descended to the ground floor. Hence the name.

I used to see the building everytime I went on the lower level of the bridge. I don't know if it was a warehouse or just a covering around an elevator shaft. The elevator was a huge one that not only brought cars, but fully loaded tractor trailer trucks down to bring provisions to Goldwater Memorial Hospital and one or two other buildings on the island. They, like the building are long gone.

Originally the trolley cars ran on what is now the outside lanes of the bridge and there was a break in the side of the northernmost traffic lane so the vehicles could turn into the staging area prior to getting onto the elevator or turning into the Manhattan bound traffic. The trolley stopped there to allow employees to get off to go to work.

Seveeral years after the building was torn down and trolley service had ceased, the lanes were converted to automobile use.

It would be extremely cost prohibitive to re-establish this building. To go to such an expense for a privleged few is ridiculous.

Don't these people know about the Q-102 if they want to avoid crowds. Perhaps they can persuade MTA bus to have two or three rush hour buses go over the QB to 2nd and 60th Street ?

The Tram, its cable system, and the former Trolley Kiosk (now the Roosevelt Island Historical Society Visitors Center)now all sit on the site of the old upside down building.

As noted earlier in one of my posts the DOT will not even discuss a staircase up to the bridge anymore.

The upside down building was a combination warehouse and elevator building.

There are already plans in the works to most probably take the tram off line for several months in 2009 to update the system and to take it offthe current single clothes line system and break it into two separate systems. No plans to add a third line though.

Presently, I don't see them adding any F trains. In the future, when/if the SAS is implemented, one could see a Queens Blvd Local/2nd Av service via 63rd St, which would, of course, stop at Roosevelt Island. But don't hold your breath waiting on that!

But stations are expensive. See my posted link in the 7 line extension topic. Unless Roosevelt Island acquires more land, I don't see it happening.

So out take-home points are: add more land to the island until it's part of Manhattan, and that should solve the problem. Glib, but that's more likely to happen than what you're asking for.

Remember that the #7 line extension will have its 10th avenue station shell not built as part of the original work because the project was too expensive. Also, though I was once a Roosevelt Island resident and would love to see anything which benefits the island and my former neighbors, I fear that an LIRR station stop there would be like a Secaucus station--Stop a trainload of people who really want to get to their destinations for the dozen or so people who would board. I know Secaucus has become more actively used, but I will respectively agree that a Roosevelt Island LIRR station would not be the best idea.

Yes.

The (Q) and the (N) trains are both express on Broadway.
The Broadway Express trains will take the 63rd Street routing and run via the Bridge.
The Broadway Local trains will take the 60th Street tunnel and run via the Tunnel.

This will simplify switching and increase the capacity and speed up the running times on the Broadway line.

The (N) will return to Continental Avenue, and the (R) will return to Astoria. (R) trains will continue to be serviced in Jamaica.

Despite the presence of the airshaft for the N,R next to the Tram we were told they would never allow new station construction underneath the bridge for fear of it weakening the ground under the bridge supports.

Was gonna say that, but checked NYCSubway to be sure and it disagreed. But I think we've been through this before and that site is wrong.

I'm sure there's some pretty good map evidence.

Probably more if. As QB is packed enough w/4 lines. Unless another segment like that Super express segment were to be built then maybe a 2nd Av thru 63rd could happen.

Not a chance, that would make 53rd and Lex a problem again. If the F were ever sent back to 53rd then there should be 2 additional side platforms for unloading and the current island platform for loading.
That way the crowd is dispursed and there would be enough room to move. [But of course that would add dwell time, but at least keep the traffic moving]

Is there anything published which discusses this route change for the N Train stating that the N will stop at Roosevelt Island (and presumably 63rdSt-Lex and 21St-Queensbridge)? I had not heard anything about this on any of the sites discussing the Second Ave Subway expansion. Thanks, Eric

If this is true..then switching will have to relocate to Lexington Avenue-63rd st..for N service to use the Queens Blvd subway.

I can see this happening, But the WHOLE POINT of the N/R switch in the first place was to give the R a YARD/SHOP for repairs...instead of Coney Island.

If you are stating that BOTH N and R trains would be served out of Jamaica,it just doesn't make sense...
The E/F/G/R and V already has over 1000 rail cars there to be serviced...

Maybe they'll switch the N and R in Brooklyn. That would give both lines yard access at their terminals.

Switching the routes in Brooklyn wouldn't really solve anything..it'll be the same situation there is Now,except the train will have a different letter code![LOL1]...

It best o just leave thing well enough alone..or eliminate the R service and replace it with something else..like a route from the Brighton..

The point being ANY LINE from 95th st will have this problem..unless it routed to the IND in the North..whether it Uptown[which would be a good idea sending a train thur 6th avenue]...

So it's really a toss up about what to do with it.

Or you can send it out via the Eastern Division and use ENY as a dumping ground...
