It isn't impossible to retain an old building (or at least its facade) and put a new tall buiding on top of it. See the Biltmore Hotel in Pershing Square, downtown Los Angeles (one of my favourite hotels).

'The one [Budapest hotel] we chose had reviews posted by many customres - many of the reviews from Americans were unfavourable, all the ones from non-Americans were very favourable'

'Americans are too used to cookie cutter franchises.'

Exactly - I was trying to think of a suitable way of putting it. Americans positively prefer international (i.e. usually American) chains of hotels and restaurants becasue they are the 'safe' option. Many (but not all) Europeans prefer places with individuality, and avoid the chains except as a last resort.

My daughter - who happens to be a Dave Barry fan - stayed at the Hotel Penn very happily after 2002.

I stayed at the Hotel Penn several times in 2005 and 2006, all but once in beautifully renovated rooms. The one unrenovated room I stayed in had the "walls made of compressed grime," broken furniture, all the lamps were unplugged, and only one outlet in the room worked. But it was still a pleasant stay, and I never heard anyone through the walls as Dave Barry described. I would certainly stay there again, regarless of the type of room I was assigned.

I agree, something fishy.

Conventions are still listing the hotels, and conventioners aren't slow sloppy people, if they sign a contract, they get the rooms. The website doesn't say anything.
And I'm on the reservations system, and it's giving me available dates through LATE 2008....

So I'm going onto a hotel news source....and all I can find is.....
NEW YORK, April 2, 2001 - New York’s Hotel Pennsylvania announced today the completion of the first phase of their renovation program. The hotel, one of the city’s legendary properties, and among the four largest, has completely rebuilt the lobby, elevators, and is in the process of a floor-by-floor makeover. Half of the main elevator bank has been completely replaced, with the remaining portion coming on-line shortly.

“By any standard this is a substantial project. Our goal is to ensure that we retain our character, while modernizing facilities to meet the needs of the business traveler,” said Steve Leonard, the Hotel’s director of sales and marketing.

Longtime a favorite destination of travelers world-over, New York’s Hotel Pennsylvania features over 1700 rooms with an ideal, midtown location opposite Madison Square Garden and Amtrak’s Penn Station.

The results of this renovation can be easily seen on the property’s remodeled floors, where stunning lobby carpeting leads to rooms filled with tasteful furniture and all-new soft goods. CMS Design Inc., a Manhattan based design firm has been charged with the overall project coordination. “In keeping with today’s trends, we’ve selected a combination of both classical and contemporary furnishings, all designed to enhance our guest’s stay,” noted Chris Smith, a principal of CMS.

As the first phase of the renovation is completed, subsequent phases will see the renovations extended to remaining floors.

Since 1919, New York’s Hotel Pennsylvania has been host to literally
millions of visitors to Manhattan. With 1700 rooms, and over 70,000 square
feet of meeting and exhibit space the property is capable of handling
conventions, tours and individual traveler requirements. Its location on 7th
Avenue at 33rd Street is convenient to the business and the fashion districts,
as well as the Javits Center. The property is known for having the
longest-running telephone number, which prompted Glenn Miller’s famous song
“Pennsylvania 6-5000.”

Hotel Pennsylvania Named 2006 eMarketer of the Year by TravelCLICK and HSMAI; New York City Landmark Hotel Recognized at 50th Annual Adrian Awards Gala / January 2007

---
Why is the only place that talks about this is here and wikipedia???

Vornado's plans take advantage of the fact that the site is the only remaining area in Midtown Manhattan that would not require special permits for development of a new office project of that size.

As an original statler hotel, I'm amazed this isn't National Trust Historic Hotel.

But then again, I"m from Florida, they don't even build a CVS without something shady in the background going on.

I still hope that has not been dropped from the plans or anything like that.
They have not really done much work on the lower portion of the building in a couple of years, because they are using the ground floor for material and equipment storage, as they slowly complete the upper floors. (the southeast corner on the ground floor is beginning to take shape, however). So I cannot tell what is going on underground.
I just called Durst to see what I could find out, and they didn't really know much (one person in the construction dept. was away). I still don't see where it would come out on the Times Sq. side, and they didn't know if it would connect with the Conde Nast building (which is inbetween the BOA and Times Sq, and they own as well).
The date on the whole building now is sometime next year.

Also, on 33rd St. I had written the Mall, suggesting that it would be beneficial for them to reopen the passage. As it is, the guy who supplied the other pictures said it is connected by a door to the Mall's utility tunnel. So perhaps, they might make a deal with Vornado to share the passage, like the one on 49th connecting 745 7th with 1251 6th.

With all this talk about the mall and its general area; I forgot the announcement (from April, already) that J C Penney would be moving into the Mall!
http://www.theshophound.typepad.com//the_shophound/2007/04/jc_penney_confi.html
I had thought "oh, good, they're probably going to take the space on top that was converted to offices for a nonn-retail firm, and reexpand the Mall", but this article says JC Penney will take the bottom three floors (from the street, down)! So All those tenants will have to be relocated! It would be nice if the offices moved out, and they did use that space for retail again!

But now with JCPenney taking the lower floors, they will have complete (sole) use of the service and utility area leading to the passageway! Perhaps they might want to reopen it, so they can be connected to Penn Sta.!

That's good! So now there is only one company involved with the passage! Perhaps they will see that it would be useful to connect their tenants (which as I have just posted, will include JC Penney on the lower floors where the passage is), to the Penn Station concourse.

OK, I did a little more exploring today. This is the exit on 32nd St. that I remember coming out of. How I got there from the passageway I still don't know. There was a bus in the way so I could only an angle view. Also I was incorrect in an earlier post - it is not a Sbarro on the NE corner of 32/7 as you can see from the green sign on the left.

Next I went to the 33rd St. Entrance, went down the stairs to the right and turned to the right at the bottom where ther is a door. Luckily, the vents on the door were bent and I was able to get a picture of the passageway inside. You can see that there is some temporary lighting down there.

Here's is the map with a red arrow showing where I took the above picture from.

In the Beginning there was Macy*s between 34 and 35 and occupied the whole block. There was Sacks 34th Street between 33 and 34 and occupied about 1/3rd of the block. In the 70s Korvettes was in there. Gimbles was between 32nd and 33rd Streets and occupied about 2/3rds of the block. It also had a building south of 32nd Street and there was a high story passageway between the buildings. Methinks they had their upholstery shop there.

ANOTHER inside picture?
Well, that's the 7th Avenue end. There used to be a huge slam gate there, as wide as the passage itself. I saw that open once, and there was some fire in some room off to the side (and the walls do look smoke charred), so it would be open. Shortly afterward, they built the wall with the small door, which says "station Dept.
It was completely dark looking in, and you could not see light from the other end. Well, the person who posted the other pictures last year said that they did build a wall right where the mall property ends, so it does not go all the way through. That would kind of make sense, as both ends had different owners (the mall, and the hotel), and it is in those properties' respective vaults. But now the owners are the same (Vornado)!

So it is just a matter of Vornado being interested in reopening and maintaining it. (Again, it would be beneficial to their tenants on the mall end!) I just got through emailing the suggestion about it to them. I want to e-mail JC Penney to, but it doesn't make sense as they are not in there yet.
(I was not able to update my page with the other pictures yet, because of some system error or maintenance in AOL; can't access ftp space).

If/when the hotel is torn down what will happen to its famous phone number (PEnnsylvainia 6-5000) one of the best known in NY? (made famous of course by Glenn Miller)

Good points. There is a similar situation with subjects other than architecture. Some have expressed here before that NTT's are also a reflection of sameness throughout the world, or proposed platform doors, and other ideas that are international style. But there are two sides to it: While some argue the above is a loss of a city's unique character, others would consider it lagging behind and that such these styles are imperative to have in a global world. And, of course, the "tourist friendly" aspect of people having to see familiar things wherever they go, also discussed here recently.

Yeah, but part of the whole thing of tourism is seeing something different. Like goinf to Europe where all the old buildings have the "Europe" look (with the slanted roofs and stuff). It looks like they are keeping a lot more of that over there. I guess all these tycoons flying around the world want Europe to be the historic place and America to look futuristic (like only the newest sections of Europe).

Durst still touts the passageway on its website, so I gather it is still going to happen. I am not sure where it will connect on the Times Square end.

Well, of those I have been to only Applebee's. I have also been to Ralphie's, but only in their private dining room, away from the maddening crowd.

For something different, Try Georgia and the Owl in Amidon, ND.

I was misguided enough to order the "King Size" prime rib (for $9.95), not only could I not finish it, but the portion that I took home in a dogie bag made FOUR sandwiches.

And I NEVER thought I'd see the day when a LION could not finish off his Wildebeest in one sitting.

Some how I don't think that place will attract the "money crowd" of people in their 20's that Applebees, Chilis, TGI Fridays, Bennigans, and Riby Tuesday, etc target.....

I don't see why not. It *is* the only restaurant in the county. Only restaurant in a thousand square miles or more.

AND people *do* drive from hundreds of miles away just to eat there.

Well, they can always start a song...

Hotel California Pennsylvania

On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway;
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself,
’this could be heaven or this could be hell’
Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor,
I thought I heard them say...

Welcome to the Hotel California Pennsylvania
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California Pennsylvania
Any time of year, you can find it here

Her mind is tiffany-twisted, she got the mercedes bends
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys, that she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat.
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget

So I called up the captain,
’please bring me my wine’
He said, ’we haven’t had that spirit here since nineteen sixty nine’
And still those voices are calling from far away,
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say...

Welcome to the Hotel California Pennsylvania
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
They livin’ it up at the Hotel California Pennsylvania
What a nice surprise, bring your alibis

Mirrors on the ceiling,
The pink champagne on ice
And she said ’we are all just prisoners here, of our own device’
And in the master’s chambers,
They gathered for the feast
The stab it with their steely knives,
But they just can’t kill the beast

Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the door
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before
’relax,’ said the night man,
We are programmed to receive.
You can checkout any time you like,
But you can never leave!

There *IS* an Applebees in Dickinson and two more in Bismarck. I have eaten in the ones in Bismarck and Fargo, and even in the one in Dickinson, come to think of it, but given a druther, I'd rather eat at Bonanza, the steak might not be as good, but it is a quieter place to eat. Kids make far less noise than unruly adults. The Elks is a good place to eat with good steaks, almost no waiting, and an adult (over 38) crowd.

Jack's has excellent steaks, but it is more than an hour wait to be seated. The popovers at the Ramkota Hotel are to die for.

Dickinson (pop 15,000) has more than 100 eateries. Here in Richardton, there is one eatery (not counting the Abbey, of course) which has decent foods but is not a restaurant as much as an eatery.
