Retirement Plans for R44/46?

Posted by Mitch45 on Wed Feb 9 15:53:43 2005

I find it hard to believe but the R44's and most of the R46's have entered their fourth and presumably final decade of service. I clearly remember when the R44's were new. They replaced the R1-9 on the Queens IND.

Any timetable on their retirement? I wonder if the R32's will outlive them.

I would assume that some of the R44's will be leaving when the last of the R160's come in, and the R46's... well... let's just say that they'll have to order new cars (R200's?) to replace them.

I'm going to have to disagree. Many of the R44's will go first, if not all of them. They in the worst structural condition of the retiring class (R32-R44).

The 46's...going...?

Nahhh....
The Oldest of them are only 30 years old...and they have years of life in them....

I see them being replaced sometime between 2010-15, maybe...

Now the 44's...yep...
I can see them going ..at 34 years ..and being the worst rail cars running...
They never lived up to the hype about them..and due to the continued framing problems....if they make it to 40..I'll throw a party...2008 is the limit I see for them...

According to "sources," the R46's will get a light overhaul mainly pertaining to aesthetics. But those R44's are most likely going first, they are awful. Actually, I wonder if anyone has sound recordings of the R44's and R46's when they had the P-Wire. The sounds should be interesting.

The 46's had a sound all their own..that I haven't heard anywhere else....

I know the 42/40/38s had a sound like the old PA 1-3 cars....

Right..the 46 GOH did wonders for them,unlike the 44's....

The 44's are DOGS...Then and NOW...

If all the option orders are filled, there will be enough R160's to cover every car class from R32 through R44. However, with the MTA's $$$ situation, I doubt that all options will be filled immediately.

The "sources" vary and have little effect on the final decisions about what's being retired. Most of the rumors around the R44's retirement come from TA workers who dislike the R44's intensly.

I posted last November that the MTA might not be allowed to replace any 75' car with the R160.

Well, as of now, it looks like SI has three options:
M1's, R46's, and R160's. I would seriously doubt R160's coming, but there are "rumors" of one or two sets coming over for testing. It looks like R46's or M1's.

The SIRT is for all purposes a "Railroad operating subway equipment"...

Due to the fact that SIRT employees are trained on NYCT equipment..I believe R46 cars SHOULD be sent there...

But REBUILT M-1 cars Should be sent there, to save on purchasing new cars..to increase service....and running times..
Higher speeds,better passenger comforts....all a plus.

I still say M1's. B Division can't afford to give up any extra cars especially w/so many on the verge of retirement.

R160's were meant to replace the older trains, not fill in holes from the R46's departures.

The MTA has said in the past that it will not order 75 foot cars again.

No, it hasn't.

The economic realities which created the 75' car concept have not gone away.

Dude..the 160s comming to the NYCT have NOTHING to do with what runs on STATEN ISLAND...

Thats not a NYCT issue....

It's an MTA....and FRA issue...
Thats WHY I say,it would be BETTER if the LIRR M1 cars were GOH..and placed in service on SIRT...

And I mean..GOH..DOWN TO THE BARE METAL...

The SIRTOA is actually a subsidiary of the NYCTA, so it is an NYCTA problem. I believe that the R160 order is meant to replace all R44's INCLUDING R44SI's.
