Rembember when the C ran on the Concourse and the B went to 168th? And the days before "The Map" and its cluttered layout of pop-up info boxes and when the subway map had either individual route information or multilingual advice on the reverse? Here's a Bronx subway map circa 1997 showing all service north of 125 Street.

I remember that, I used to love studying that one over & over. I also remember there was one where they have the lines individually on the back as well. Thanks for posting this.

Here's the Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens sections.

Personally, I've been a big critic of "The Map" since its January 1998 premiere. Most customers who ask for "The Map" want a "subway map", not a MTA regional system map including subways, commuter lines and regional connections. What's the point of have the Metro-North/LIRR on the reverse side if most folks who ride subways (or use a subway map) won't even use MNCR/LIRR. Ditto to having MTA Bridges and Tunnels on the map! Most NYCT riders don't even drive!

The clutter on the "The Map" can be annoying, especially with those "pop-up" boxes listing transfers and connecting routes. The lack of individual route information (the "strip maps" we saw in the past on the Tauranac maps) on the reverse is another off point. "The Map" could be improved if it was published in two seperate editions-"subway only" with individual route information (service, frequencies and strip maps on reverse) and a "regional edition"-covering the whole MTA system.

I still prefer the original 1979-97 Tauranac maps. "The Map" ruined Tauranac's unique style. (But the September 2002 edition restored the classic-styled paneled service guide listing hours of operation that dissapeared after 1997).

What about when the Broadway BMT express tracks used to sit dilapidated with no hope in sight.

Yeah, we were all wondering if the Norton would ever return to the express tracks where it belonged.

Those were never used in the 90's, except for a few exceptions:

1. The 1990 south-side tease, where N's operated over the bridge for three months beginning in September, while the B, D and orange Q remained intact.

2. April-November 1995 had the bridge closed completely middays and weekends, and Brighton service at this time consisted of Q local service via tunnel, express from Canal to 57th and then via 63rd St. to Queensbridge. D's ended at 34th, B's ran as shuttles in Brooklyn only.

3. 1997-1998, while the 63rd St. tube tracks were replaced, the yellow S used the tracks north of 34th St.

At the beginning of the 1990's the (C)atherine ran Bedford Park Boulevard/145th Street to Beach 116th Street with R30s and no (V)ictoria.
