I don't know if this was the same train, but a 4 train at Nevins was spotted with a mural today. I'm not sure of the number, it possibly was 1150 heading up the back of the train, but again, not sure of the number. Shocked the heck out of my eyes for sure, especially the fact that it was business as usual on that 4 train. |

That train was on 3 Block at Utica in the back where any peion artist can get to it since the Best Cleaning barn is East 180 Street it should have been taken out of service and sent to the Yard ASAP.It wasnt you think we like operating a tagged train like that? Train Operators who SEE a train tagged like that in a yard(in this case it wasnt in a Yard).You cant see all around the train at 3 block at Utica i know i have done Put-Ins from there myself. You report it and IF the Dispt says STAY IN SERVICE you stay in service period. ABD's like this(serious vandalism) are the Line Supt's call if they say keep it moving so be it end of story we do as we are told down here, saftey first of coruse. "Lazy Train Operators" have Nothing to do with taking a tagged train Uptown, more like Supt's not wanting ABD's for Line Preformance, beacuse even Dispt's have to get a OK for a Train to be Double-O-Sixed when it comes to that. So next time you see a train like remember my post beacuse this wasnt the frist and im sure it wont be the last time a train like that will be in Service. Write a Letter send a email to the Line Supt and take your beef with them posting it here on this site wont do a darn thing.. For the record i have seen trains tagged in Yards and bagned it in myself, beacuse its my job. Im sure if that train was in a yard the T/O banged it in as well.. Did that matter?? |

(back in the 70s)They didn't like the R-6/7/9s either. And if there was a tag on one of them, it was usually carelessly done. There were, of course, exceptions to this rule. A crew out of Queens - "Uncle John", "Quang", "Flint" and "Pentagram" were particularly cruel to the R stock that was laid up on the Hillside Express. I remember seeing cars like #1233, #1415, #1304, #937, #1117 etc. wearing pictographs of wizards, skulls, ghouls, highly stylized logos and the like. Then, in the East - there were these two taggers "Wizz" (sometimes spelled with three "Z"s), and "Super Strut" who liked to do "throw up" tags on the R-7a and R-9. They NEVER touched the blue/grey cars, only the brown ones. I had a list of these somewhere but I can't find it at the moment. wayne |

I traveled all over the city back then (1971-1978) Didn't see any of this crap in 1971. It began in the spring of 1972, when New york Street gangs, dormant since the late 50's early 60's, resurfaced. |

True, but they were concentrated only in one yard (ENY). Yards like Jamaica and Coney Island sported mostly stainless steel cars. In the early 1980's there were NO stainless steel cars on the IRT and they were your best bets for quality grafitti. I am also unaware of any of the R16's or 27/30's being painted after 1980. Some of the R16's sported exterior grafitti placed on the cars in the mid 70's all the way at the end in 1987. |

Yes, #1233 was still flying her colours when she made that mad dash down Hillside Avenue, though her glass had been scraped clean by that time. If I remember correctly, one end of the car was tagged by "Pentagram", with a hatted and bearded wizard and the other end was a big blob mural by "Flint", below the windowline. The most vividly-painted R of all was #1415 - roof to sill by at least three different vandals, and all the glass painted out.wayne |

No, but the color inside of #1277 (aside from the substatial meal spread out all over her floor) was just as ughly - that bilious, marine shade of greyish-green that's so common on the R cars - NOT the bluish-grey tint (like the R-7 and R-7a had). And it had those funny fans too with the pointy noses and wavy blades. This was true of all the R-6-2 cars.wayne |
