They were the first 10 to be overhauled during GOH in the late 80s. They (10) were done by Buffalo Transit while the rest (584) were done by Morrison Knudsen. |

The lists that you've compiled is just a load of railfan minutia. While, of course, you missed the most distinguishing feature of the car. The R-32 GEs have the original metal outline for the marker lights and end route and destination signs. The R-32 MKs have new stainless steel panels instead. |

Posted by Nilet on Sat Apr 28 16:13:13 2007, in response to Re: R32 GE Rebuilds, posted by RonInBayside on Sat Apr 28 15:09:38 2007. Did a bunch of foamers secretly rebuild an R32 when the TA wasn't looking? Not quite. They were originally Model-69A cars, although I sold 10 of them to NYCT because they were defective. I had to remove the pants and put on third rail shoes, as well as make them shorter and narrower, but the cost of doing that minus the sale price was cheaper than disposing of them or fixing them or letting them wheeze around. Here's a rare photo of former 69A "R32" car testing on the NYC subway before service without a complete rebranding and renumbering. BTW, the big circle thing was there to cover up the rusty hole caused by the water from the bathroom sink leaking out and corroding everything. |

The ENTIRE R32 fleet was built by The Budd Company. There are no "fake" 32s. However, when their General overhauls came in the late 80's, ten cars were sent to GE in Buffalo instead of Morrison Knudsen. those ten are the R 32 GEs. When the cars came back, they were split into three groups, Phase 1, phase 2 and GE R32 Phase 1-(re-built by Morrison Knudsen) have WABCO Air Brake packages, GE Master Controllers (Throttle) and Thermo King HVAC units R32 Phase 2- (also re-built by Morrison Knudsen) have NY Air Brake equipment, Westinghouse Master Controllers and Stone Safety HVAC units. (phase 1 and phase 2 sets now compise mixed 32 and 32A making the old name moot.) and now to give you nightmares |

It always has been just "G" Overhaul to distinguish this heavy overhaul from previous lighter overhauls A through F. Level G was the highest and most comprehensive level undertaken by NYCT. One day someone decided that the G stood for General which it never did and that myth has been perpetuated all these years. |
