Breaking News: MBTA Green Line Boeing LRVs -- *FINAL DAY* |
|
Posted by Canton Viaduct on Fri Mar 16 02:34:38 2007 Thursday, March 15, 2007Streetcars named perspire reach end of line By Mac Daniel, Globe Staff NEWTON -- To the riders waiting at Riverside station Thursday morning, the old rusting trolley that squealed to a stop was just another old, rusting Green Line trolley. But to the MBTA and a handful of rail enthusiasts snapping away with digital cameras, it was much more: one of the last runs of the 32-year-old Boeing-Vertol light rail vehicles, a rail pioneer to which they are bidding a fond good riddance. "They’re worn out," said Bradley H. Clarke, president of the Boston Street Railway Association. "They’ve done their job, and they should be retired with dignity." They were the first Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority trolleys with air conditioning, but the units failed in the 1980s, prompting one scribe to label the trolleys "a streetcar named perspire." They were also the first T trolleys with large picture windows and the first with newfangled doors, but they also routinely failed. They were intended to mark the renaissance of streetcar building in the United States, but they derailed so much that a multimillion dollar legal settlement with Boeing made them free to the T. The 29 remaining Boeing trolleys are distinguished from newer models by their single row of four headlights, traditional windshield wipers, and a train number in the 3400s. They also are some of the last Green Line trolleys with hand-cranked destination signs, which were often wrong. Now, after years of being cannibalized for spare parts, the Boeings -- which first hit the rails on Dec. 29, 1976 -- are making just one trip a day on the D branch of the Green Line. Only two are used on any given day. "If we get one good trip out of it, we feel good," said Peter Messina, chief inspector at Riverside. "It’s like having an old person around, you know? They can only walk so much. They can only go so far. I came on the job before they were here, and they’re going to retire before me." The last trips were scheduled for Friday, but snow could cancel them. Most of the remaining trolleys will be disassembled by backhoe for scrap metal. One car may go to a trolley museum in Maine, and about six could find new life scraping slush off overhead trolley lines. Link I really wish I could be there for this. |

I go to Boston rather frequently, but I was never arounfd on a weekday rush to catch one in service. |

Somehow this feels more emotional than it should be. Yes, they were garbage, but garbage that partially kicked off the era of light rail. Sentimental reasons play a role too, my first ride on the Green Line (or any trolley/streetcar/light rail system) was on a Boeing pre-rehab, plug doors and all. They were crap, but I'm gonna miss 'em. |

I'm amazed they soldiered on this long. Now we can argue whether they provdided a "bridge" to the current light rail renaissance, or were a speed bump on the way to transit revival.I vote for the latter. And PCCs still run. |

There's an irony in all of this. When the Boeings were pushed into service, without fanfare, on December 30, 1976, it was during a snowstorm. The last run of the Boeings, with some fanfare, on March 17, 2007, was done shortly before snow began falling in Boston. Snow ushered in the beginning, snow ushered out the end. I'm still gonna miss 'em, even if this attention should have come out of the (premature) retirements of the 01100's and 01400's. |

A company who is primarily in the "defense" "industry" cannot design something unless it uses $100 secrews and $750 toilet seats. They fall on their ass unless it's a "Cost Plus" deal. |

Boeing has designed some excellent products: 707-320B, 727, 747,757, and the upcoming 787--to name a few. Variations may have been used in the defense industry, but they were designed as commercial aviation products. Problems happen when desk jockeys with no practical experience try to design something new. Such as the flawed truck design for the Boston cars. |

Heh, I just found out that a car class I didn't know existed is retiring!I'd have liked a chance to go to Boston to take pics. Last time I was in Boston, I was treated like a terrorist. I was angry at the time, but then I saw the Bostonians treat advertisements like bombs, so I figure they're just suffering from a mass case of panic disorder, and it was nothing personal. It would probably be more effective to prescribe Xanex then complain to the authorities. |

I would like Boeing to design the next generation "delivery truck" bomber. The B-52 IS ***O*L*D*** but its basic premise has served the Air Force well over the years. Base it on the 747 and give it DIAHAREEA capability. Space research will provide the future of power projection but there always will be need for a "carpet bombing" capability to prepare the theater for ground forces. The F-35 program provides good fighter support into the future while the newest generation of guided missle destroyers can escort the sealift necessary for introduction opf occupation ground forces. |

Here's my contribution: Now, the story about those cars: Originally, there were THREE systems involved [along with the Feds] in the design and implementation of the Boeing cars, MUNI, MBTA and SEPTA. When the designs came out, SEPTA took one look and said "No Thanks" and walked away from the project. The Feds and Boeing whipped up a modified design of the car [single end operation, between 47 and 50 feet in length] to get SEPTA on board, but SEPTA still said no because the cars' design was fundamentally flawed [and SEPTA caught hell for it because the existing PCC fleet was held together with spit, chewing gum, rubber bands and Elmer's glue]. When the Boeings debuted in Boston in 1977 many were embarrased in Philly. Then MUNI got theirs in '78-'79. By then SEPTA had ordered the K cars from Japan [1978], and caught even more shit, especially from Delco politicians where the Boeing Plant was located. But guess who got the last laugh? That's right, it was SEPTA! While MUNI and the T were dealing with the Boeing's shortcomings and defects, SEPTA put the K cars on the tracks here with little or no bugs or defects, and now that the K cars has been running for about 25-26 years in reliable service, while those Boeings that SEPTA's critics were jealous about have been turned into scrap! |

I'm not sure that all of them have the silver scheme (which I don't particularly like either.) What was really interesting was the fact that while Kawasaki got the contract, the final assembly was done at Boeing-Vertal in south Philly, who built the Boeing LRVs for Boston and SF.The K-cars are so successful because the control equipment is the same as the MBTA Type 7s and the TTC's CLRV's. In fact, when Kawasaki shipped 9000 to SEPTA, they had TTC people to assist them with getting the bugs out of both 9000 and 100, the only two cars built in the Yogo Works of Kawasaki. The only thing wrong with both the Type 7's and the K-cars is neither has the TTC mechanical lock on the brake pedal so the operator can take their feet off the pedals at a traffic light. On the K-cars and the Type 7s, you can't without the car going into emergency. |

I beleive the Boeing LRV was spec'd out by UMTA. Boeing Vertol won the contract to build them. The guys who had all the tribal knowledge for streetcar type cars were already retired or in the great beyond. St. Louis and Pullman-Standard were already in trouble headed to be finished off by the R44/46 debacle. I'd have to look at my historical records on why Budd didn't/wouldn't build them.Boeing Aircraft and Boeing Defense had little to do with the LRV. Boeing had its hands full in the early to mid 70's trying to keep the B747 in service - there were alot of teething problems with that bird. We were kept busy with until the late 90's when the -100/-200 series became impractical or too expensive to keep flying anymore. |

UMTA was a federal agency. Boeing, as a "defense" contractor had an inside track vwith government procurement. It is a shame that UMTA was forced to push that crap, probably thanks to some ex military drone in the procurement chain, A Budd LRV may have kept Budd in the rail business. |
