I believe it could..The 4TH AVENUE SUBWAY was built with this in mind..ehich is the reason for the extremely high ceilings from the Manhattan Bridge to 36th street[or as far as the STUBS BELLMOUTHS in the tunnel].. Also..I FINALLY got to see the UTICA AVENUE SUBWAY's STATION above the A/C Line on Fulton st..and the WORTH STREET PARTIAL STATION! Yeah Me! |

I once looked for South 4th Street stationwhen I worked one day at Broadway. The only regret was not having a good flashlight. I made it to the other end of the Broadway Mezzazine. Walked up a wide staircase and maybe a step after the top of those stairs. I had my camera. But my flash wasn't enough to make a decent photo. |

Yes, the Centre St subway, and the 4th Ave subway in Brooklyn were built to railroad standards.I don't know if the later Nassau stations at Broad and Fulton followed those specs though too. |

No, you can't put a 12'5" high car in the Nassau Loop. After 1940, Eastern Division BUs had to reverse in Chambers Street and take the "H" tracks to reach Coney Island. There are a number of other height-restricted areas, which explains why the TA couldn't restore the original roofs on the museum BUs. I also think new structures on some lines (like at some of the street tunnels on the Sea Beach) would prohibit taller cars on that line as well, where previously they could have used it. |

Here are pictures of the Chestnut St. connection, the first from the Broadway BRT El and the second from the LIRR Atlantic Ave. line. The first picture is from the 1930's after the service had been eliminated; hence, no tracks on the connection.  |

We all call it South 4th St, but seeing that the subway was running under South 4th, intersecting with Union, it should probably have been called "Union Ave".....Just as the station we always call 'Utica Ave" would have been called "Fulton St" in all likeliness. |

Yeah, but they used MP-41's for that, which were IRT car sized, much smaller than an MP-54. I think the MP-54's would be much too long for subway tunnels and would never clear the turns but since Steve specifically said height wise they probably made the clearance. |
