Actually a third and fourth door which are high level:![]() I would think that while the distance between the trap-equipped vestibule doors and the high plat only mid-body cars is sufficient to reduce crowding amongst boarding passengers. For NJT to have vestibule doors at the end of the car the door has to slide into the carbody inboard of the carend. In order to have a wider door you'd have to place a double leaf door where the high plat door is, which would place the trap where the truck is, something I believe the designers wish to avoid and that wouldn't make for easier boarding than the as built design. The alternative would be a single leaf door at the end of the car which was as long as a double leaf door. But as the LIRR's C3 and M7 experience shows that can be troublesome, and over time the potential for problems from that arrangement is quite great. The possibility that the trap would intrude on the truck's swing area is also quite great. As with the double leaf door located around the quarter point the very wide door at the car end also would not improve passenger flow when compared to the as built arrangement. In this instance I believe NJT has actually chosen the best alternative for their solution, especially when some rumors had it that previous incarnations of this design would be devoid of traps and thus low platform capability. |

NJ Transit gears up for multi-level train serviceOn Dec. 11, New Jersey Transit will begin operating its first multi-level train on the Northeast Corridor between Trenton, N.J., and New York. The agency expects to have nine multi-level trains ready for service in December; car builder Bombardier Transportation will begin delivering the remaining 225 cars in February. As vehicles are delivered and tested, NJ Transit will replace single-level cars on its busiest lines ? the Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast Line and MidTOWN DIRECT line. The new cars have up to 20 percent more seating capacity compared with a single-level car, as well as an upper and lower seating level and mezzanine level. The cars also feature large, tinted windows, wider aisles, fully accessible restrooms, automated public-address systems, LED screens, external public-address speakers, and wheelchair, cart, stroller and luggage areas. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey contributed $250 million toward the first 100 multi-level cars, which eventually will operate through the Trans-Hudson Express Tunnel. The two agencies are building the tunnels beneath the New Jersey Palisades and Hudson River to a new station beneath Manhattan?s 34th Street that will connect to Penn Station. |

Both Rotem and Kawasaki, when asked by DVARP, said that it'd be perfectly possible to have all doors on the Silverliner V be capable of both high and low platform boarding had SEPTA specified it. Unfortunately it seems SEPTA has this delusion that they'll be eliminating high platforms and only needs two traps per car. |

Yes, the LIRR has them, not the MNRR West-of-Hudson service. Additionally, the LIRR C3s cannot fit through the Hudson River tubes and lack traps so they'd be completely useless for service on the PJ line. If the MTA wants bilevels on the PJ line they'd have to place a piggyback or joint option order with NJT for the Comet VI or devise a method by which something like a Bombardier Bilevel found on western Commuter Rail lines could be operated on the PJ line from Hoboken. |

Correct when MNCR replaced its fleet of 38 west of Hudson cars they bought 65 Comet V's from Alstom. So there is plenty of redundancy in west of Hudson Fleet, once the MultiLevels come online expect the Port Jervice trains to get one or two more cars. There is no plan for MNCR to buy any Multilevels for either side of Hudson. |
