Actually a third and fourth door which are high level:I would think that while the distance between the trap-equipped vestibule doors and the high plat only mid-body cars is sufficient to reduce crowding amongst boarding passengers. For NJT to have vestibule doors at the end of the car the door has to slide into the carbody inboard of the carend. In order to have a wider door you'd have to place a double leaf door where the high plat door is, which would place the trap where the truck is, something I believe the designers wish to avoid and that wouldn't make for easier boarding than the as built design. The alternative would be a single leaf door at the end of the car which was as long as a double leaf door. But as the LIRR's C3 and M7 experience shows that can be troublesome, and over time the potential for problems from that arrangement is quite great. The possibility that the trap would intrude on the truck's swing area is also quite great. As with the double leaf door located around the quarter point the very wide door at the car end also would not improve passenger flow when compared to the as built arrangement. In this instance I believe NJT has actually chosen the best alternative for their solution, especially when some rumors had it that previous incarnations of this design would be devoid of traps and thus low platform capability. |
