NJT Comet VI multilevels preview at NWK tomorrow

From the amNY Subway Tracker:

Tomorrow NJ TRANSIT will give a sneak preview of its first multilevel train “a six-car consist” at Newark Penn Station.

NJ Transit execs are also expected to announce when it will go into “revenue service” and be available for the general public. Bombardier is the manufacturer.

I'd love to ride the first revenue run. I'd be most appreciative to whomever can post that info first.

ayup. And walked around a bit, too. Three cars or so were open, including one with a restroom. The closed cars had sandbags on their seats and one car even had no seats and was full of white barrels (a sign on the platform explained that they were water barrels and that they were for testing in places such as New Mexico and the Northeast Corridor. Sandbags were also there for testing.) Tests are done up to 135 mph (!) in New Mexico, and there will be testing through December.

Ticket holds: About the same as in Comet V
Oddity: Exit windows for emergencies are labeled on the outside - and different cars had different numbers of labeled windows. Maybe they're experimenting with those.

Reason for double vestibules: one of the two on each end is for embarking and alighting at low platforms (rarely necessary on the NEC, which is all-high-platform on NJT). The other is apparently to replace the middle door at busy stations.
Seats have movable armrests in the aisle side (but no "reading lamps", and downstairs has no luggage racks).

Garbage cans have a snazzy design and so do the lights.

Try not to bump your head standing up and sitting down.

They modified ALP-44 4410 to permit 135MPH operation and sent it out there to pull the cars.

It is NOT inaccurate: this is a newly constructed model of railcar (like a new make and model of automobile), and - even though the type of railcar has been built before - this is a train that NJT intends to run in the future. Thus, the title "Train of Tomorrow" is apt and accurate.

But then what's the point of having a dedicated high-level door right next to one that can open at both levels?

If it's for extra boarding capacity, that would be wasted because the doors are right next to each other and it would cause passenger traffic problems.

They should just make the doors wider then.

C3s also have a blocky shape, slightly different cabin design, and they are not NJT trains. Furthermore, the seating design is different and so is some of the cabin's "look" (well, slightly different). The reason why I am counting it as a "Train of Tomorrow" is because it is a new set of cars, which have never been on NJT before, and which differs widely from the rolling stock NJT typically uses.

"Why all the sandbags and water barrels? As part of NJ Transit's ongoing dynamic testing program, hundreds of sandbags and water barrels have been placed aboard rail cars to simulate the weight of a full load of passengers.

Each car is loaded with up to 820 sandbags weighing 50 lbs each. Water barrels are used in conjunction with sandbags to provide weight for testing under maximum stress levels.

The simulated weight enables NJ Transit and the manufacturers to test the cars' performance in breaking, acceleration, speed, and ride quality under real-world conditions and ensure that all performance, safety, and comfort standards are met."

The roof IS low because the Pennsylvania Railroad tunnels are low-ceilinged.
