Ever WMATA Station has an emergency exit at the ends of the platform when there is no surface mezzanine exit at the ends of the platform. Because Glenmont has it’s surface mezzanine near mid platform there are emergency exit stairs at both ends of the platform. There also are emergency exit stairs in the shaft beyond the interlocking north of the station. I like the new lights, but that's just me. Old lights make the place look like a symphony concert hall, which I could never stay awake in, and it hurts my eyeballs. Personally I prefer the mercury lamps over the sodium lamps because they better knock down the natural reddish tone of the sand and gravel in the concrete. I've always liked the different color at Glenmont.Several stations on the A Route also have improved lighting, including Friendship Heights (how long will that last?) and the areas under the pods at Tenleytown and Woodley Park. I was riding in the 4th car of my train home on Friday night since I was unable to reach the first and stopped under the pods at both Tenley and Woodley. |

All of the newer systems (LA, ATL, DC, etc) seem to follow the same pattern don't they? I've heard a few reasons why they are so large, but what it comes down to is that because of the way the stations are constructed, having the platforms and mezzanines so large is relatively inexpensive given the overall costs involved. |

Having huge stations to accommodate more passengers but designing them with limited access and egress seems contradictory to me. Glenmont is by no means a 'huge station'. The open columnless design of the station gives the illusion of a large space. As I recall the platform is less the 30' (9.1m) wide John in the sand box of Maryland's eastern shore. |

The major ones are the third rail and approaching trains. The fact that a tunnel is not an ideal location for an emergency exit for passengers on the platform would seem to be beyond dispute. I would guess that it was a compromise location based on cost. If it is really the preferred location for an emergency exit, I'd like to hear why. |

The emergency exit is accessed by way of the tunnel walkway. The third rail is always on the opposite side of the tunnel from the walkway. Even in the event of a train evacuation in a tunnel walking in and or crossing the track bed to get to the exit is not necessary in more the 95 percent of the underground sections of the system. In 100 percent of the underground of the sections of the system one never has to walk near or step over the third rail to get to the tunnel walkway.
