Tuscarora Almanac for April 20

1871 – from The Book of First Runs

The 9th Avenue El resumes operation between 29th Street and Dey Street under the management of the West Side Patented Elevated Railway Company. A dummy steam locomotive was purchased and the three former cable cars were converted into standard coaches.

1930 – from The Book of First Runs

Philadelphia’s Broad Street Subway is extended from City Hall to Lombard-South.

1959 – from The Book of First Runs

New escalators are placed in service at 74th Street-Broadway-Roosevelt Avenue between the IRT Flushing Line and the IND Queens Line. The use of paper transfers is discontinued.

1964 – from The Book of First Runs

No. 7 Flushing Line trains are increased to eleven cars. As there are not enough “Bluebirds” on hand to cover all the service so R-33 “Redbirds” are sent over form the mainland. Along with them came several R-17’s single units to make up the eleventh car.

Ed. Note: A car washer had been installed in the Corona Yard to keep the new equipment clean for the World's Fair. After years of seeing the R-17's coated in black grime it was nice to see them restored to there original colors.

I guess that explains why the Broad Street line south shrunk to two tracks after Walnut-Locust, which has always been the terminal for express trains. Lombard-South was the original terminal with this extension until the line was extended to Snyder Avenue before being extended to Pattison (now NRG) Station in 1973, two years after Veterans Stadium opened.

New escalators are placed in service at 74th Street-Broadway-Roosevelt Avenue

When opened in 1959, the transfer building was wide enough for only one escalator (up only), and the staircase. The side panels on the escalator were dark green. This arrangement lasted for years.

The transfer building was then widened and a second escalator was installed. The green side panels on the original escalator were replaced with silver panels to match the new escalator, and it became down only, and the new one up only.

Years later the building was widened yet again and a third escalator was installed. This is the current layout.
