Tuscarora Almanac for January 14 |
|
Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Tue Jan 14 04:48:23 2025 Tuscarora Almanac for January 14 1907 – from The Book of First Runs The IRT Broadway Line is extended from 221st Street to 225th Street. The temporary station at 221st Street is closed and a new one opened at 225th Street. 1911 – from The Book of First Runs The 191st Street station of the IRT #1 subway line opens for passenger service. It has been long considered as the deepest station ever built on the entire NYC subway system, located 180 feet below street level. 1965 – from The Book of Last Runs This is the last day for the D-Types on the Brighton Express (BMT Rt. 1 /Q). 1966 – from The Book of Wrecks A non-revenue train of Q-Types lead by 1619C struck the former Staten Island Railway trailer car 2925 (x 504) in the Fresh Pond Yard. The impact was strong enough to push the SIRT car through the block and down into the open cut of Long Island Railroad's Montauk Branch. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

191st and Dyckman Streets on the 1 |

And there is a dramatic shift going north in the topography in that area because you go from the deepest station in the entire system of the 1 at 191st Street to at Dyckman (200th) Street a station that comes out in open cut and finishes on an elevated platform at its northern end. |

There also is a dramatic shift in topography on the East Side. This is evident when looking down Park Ave. towards Midrown Manhattan from the south end of the Metro North 125th St platform. Theres a big dip around 116-110 th Sts then a big hill begins where the tunnel begins at 97th st. with the tracks remaining fairly level |

This is the Fort George Hill on the east side of the tip of Manhattan. Throughout the change in topography, the IRT tracks remain level. The stonework above the entrance says: Fort George 1776 1905 ![]() The A train, which runs under the similar Fort Washington Hill on the west side, does not maintain a level grade, and instead of bursting through the side of the hill like the #1, remains underground at Dyckman St. ![]() |
